1 Corinthians 13:4-8:

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

There's the potential for a billion answers to this question. I agree with the guy who said go to biblegateway.com and type in love. There's page upon page of response. The underlying message of the entire bible is love. I think the one that best sums up everything is 1John 4:9

1 Cor 13:4-7 Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never looses faith, is always hopeful, and endures, through every circumstance.

I would iterate 1 John verse 4:8-16. God is love. Then one must ask what is God..... John 4:24 God is a spirit. Once one dwells in love they dwell in God. So this must be the way to truely "experiene" what love is. So it seems love cannot be known by a definition, but is only known by an indwelling experience of God, the spirit of God. When one experiences true love as some have explained previously, they are truly dwelling in God and knows God.
