Ironically, I asked a question similar to this less than a week ago. I have a 5 month old female basset. She is very close to me, and when I had my period (last week) she also came into heat! It only lasted a week for her (most heats last up to 21 days and hers was almost to the day of mine) and now she is fine. She went through 1 day of bright red bleeding (should have been about a week or more) then nothing for 3 days, then dark discharge for 1 day right at the end of my cycle!
Who knows why these things happen, but I would have her checked with your vet if it causes discomfort or abnormal behavior in them.
Best of luck!

No it is not normal. She should every 6 months unless spayed then it would be none at all. I definitely would take her to your vet to find out if she needs spayed or she may have a bladder infection or something more serious. I wouldn't wait till it got worse. You didn't say how old your dog is! That would be a coincidence for her to be bleeding at the same time. I definitely would get her checked

Okay, first of all, a little bit of comparitive reproductive anatomy between a b*tch and a woman. We both have "essentially" all the same parts. Of course size and shape differences are obvious becuase we are totally different animals. A big difference is related to bitches being litter bearing and humans typically only carry one offspring. Bitches have a very small uterine body (uterus) and large uterine horns (same as falopian tubes) where we have a relatively large uterine body and small falopian tubes. In humans offspring develop in the uterine body while canine offspring develop in the uterine horns. Another difference is that bitches have something called a vestibule which is where the utinary tract meets with the reproductive tract. As you should know, in humans, the repoductive tract has an opening separate from the urinary tract. In canines, the urinary tract and the reproductive tract share an opening.
When humans menstrate, we are sloughing (shedding) the lining of the uterus (called the endometrium). We aren't actually bleeding (like we do when we get a cut) becuase we are sloughing the lining of the uterus. In canines, they actually do bleed, but from the vagina, not the uterus. When the dog is bleeding vaginally they are in estrus or in heat (when they are sexually receptive/can get pregnant). The reason for this is unknown and unique to animals belonging to the family canidae (includes domesticated dogs, woves, coyotes, australian dingos, etc.).
Wild canids (animals belonging to the family canidae) only display one estrous period per year and typically these periods are seasonal. In the domestic b*tch, most females display two periods of estrous and as many as four have been known to occur in one year.
B*tches typically experience their first period of estrous around 1 year of age. This may occur as early as 6 months of age in small breeds or as late as 2 years in larger breeds.
If your b*tch is bleeding once a month there is a problem. Take her to see the vet. I would also recommend getting her spayed. Dealing with a b*tch in heat is not easy nor pleasant. It's messy and some of them can't deal with the "panties" you can buy for them to wear. Spaying will also lessen and even eliminate the chances of getting some types of diseases. Spaying also prevents the chance of any unwanted pregnancies. We already have too many dogs waiting for homes at animal rescues. Please make sure your dog can't add to the animal overpopulation problem.

yes, it is normal for female dogs to bleed, or have periods, because dogs are mammals, and therefore will have similar body functions. As for why she does it at the same time as you, that is because females that spend alot of time together tend to do it at the same time. Trust me I have three female dogs.
