Yes it's VERY coarse.....we generally have 3 layers to our hair, the cuticle(outer most) cortex (middle)and medulla(innermost). Gray hair has thicker of all of these due to the expansion of our scalp and more oxygen getting into the follicle as it produces the melanin and causes a prism(gray hair lacks melanin=natural pigment). Now you need to at least 20 vol. peroxide or more to get it to lift. I have had to use up to 40 to get it to stay in people's hair. Because it has more layers in the middle to open up to oxidise properly and set in and the cuticle layer will not lift easy but the stronger the peroxide better it works for some. But do not over do it because it will dry your not Gray's out!

Gray hair is more resistant to color for some reason. I like the new Nice 'n Easy Gray Solution. It covers gray and takes less time than other brands.

gray hair , like any hair, varies in texture.
and alot of hair colors wont stay in gray hair because it lacks the basic structure required to grasp the color molecules.
try a just for gray color or a lower volume peroxide
