Try one but limit you balance. If you spend $500 a month on gas, food, entertainment, have one with that limit. Pay it off monthly. DO NOT RIDE BALANCES! That is the biggest problem people have in controlling their spending.

This way you can reserve many items by having a CC. But a debit can work also.

You don't have to have a CC if you choose to live below you means. It takes serious control not to overspend with one.

Try an experiment to prove it. Pay for everything with a CC for one month, and then pay for everything with cash the next. You will see how different it is charging vs seeing your money leave your hand. Being debt free is a mindset.

Good Luck!

Capital one is the easiest to get approved for. They are a company that takes risks. Keep in mind that this means they will charge you high finance charges. The best thing to do it buy something you have money for on credit, then pay it off when the bill comes so you can avoid the charges. Once your credit is good you can get a card with your bank who has reasonable finance charges. And oh, do not listen to other people who tell you to get a sears card or target card or a retail card. They are the worst cards to get and in the long run will probably hurt your credit.

The best way is to apply for a SEARS, Foley's, Dillard's any department store card. Buy a few large items that you planned to invest in on the card and pay it back as quickly as possible. Don't use it much and when you do pay the balance in full ASAP. Discover and Visa are the most popular major credit cards but if you plan to use them for something more specific like clothe shopping or daily household things (Wal-Mart or Target cards) then it's most practical and also major credit cards can get you into trouble if they can be used universally. Stick to using them only when necessary or for emergencies this way your credit score will get better with time. Good luck.
