I find it annoying! Is it a bad habbit or what?

It's a colloquialism, a regional saying. It's like calling people dude, or bro, or boss. It's not a bad habbit, although I understand why you find it annoying. It's intended to be friendly. It's not a good or bad thing.

I've raised two girls and always called them "hon." It became the norm to also do the same with their friends. It ended up being a part of my vocabulary that I realized adults are not too keen to it. I certainly don't want to be called hon, especially from someone I don't even know... Needless to say.... In what vocabulary?

I personally believe it's a habit more than anything. Some guys just do it to make the girls feel special...I noticed that in this particular guy who called me 'hon' when he did not even know me well, but then I could tell he only wanted sex...or company 'after hours'...he also called me 'babe'...
But there are some nice people who do it just because they are pure-hearted. I know a lady who is very nice and treat every body the same way and uses the word 'honey' a lot. It depends on who is using it and how they are using it.

I think that they like just call 1 person "hon" then another and then it's a habbit .

I started saying it when I got into my first serious relationship....then I just started calling everybody hon, or different variations...it also comes with the people I hang out with. I have a lot of male friends who call me dear and darlin'...I have also been called babycakes quite frequently.....try not to let it bother you too much....we don't mean any harm, and most of the time I don't realize I've said it utnil afterwards

We don't get that much here in Canada. Some days, I find it really nice to hear something like that, even though I know the person is not really thinking of me that way! But yes, I suppose it can be annoying at times, depending on your mood.
Why do people say: "Good'bye" when you part? (It means "God be with you"). Another phrase that is absolutely meaningless to most people saying it because they don't know what they are saying.
In other words, it's just trying to be pleasant.

i'm server and i have a bad habit of calling people 'hon'.

it's because it causes a sense of closeness where there isn't one. if i'm waiting on a trucker who has just put 1300 miles in the last day, he wants to feel like he's somewhere he's welcome.

also, i can't say "hey you!" so 'hon' works just as well. think about it... go into a semi-crowded area (like a restaurant) and yell 'hey hon'. see how many people turn around.

point is, in any group of people, someone will. they want to think that someone thinks of them as their honey. even if they know noone does.

that's why people respond to 'hon' and that's why some people respond to 'hon'

When people from the South use hun/honey/sweetie (and by people, I am referring to myself) it is meant as a nice way to refer to someone. It is not meant to be rude or condescending. I do however dislike being called a dude. I think that people should look up words in the dictionary before using them in everyday vernacular. I also dislike the constant use of "um...." and "like". When people use those two words to excess, they make themselves sound stupid. It is even worse when they write with them.

Possibly bad memory. Can't remember your name, too lazy to remember your name, whatever. "Hon" is just what comes out. I don't use it, but I know people who do.
