whoa, after reading what "howdythere" wrote, that's pretty scary. but then i have this other question, if it's so bad, why is it sold and sometimes encouraged to feed this to your dog?

Rawhide of any kind is one of the absolute WORST things you can feed a dog. Not only is it very difficult to digest, it swells to 3 to 4 times it's size after being ingested and can cause life threatening blockages. Try putting a pressed rawhide knotted bone in a bowl of water for a day or two and you will be shocked at what you see happen to it. Pure beef tendons and chews are always a better choice, they are digestible and do not swell

Hi, my 6 yr old IG does the exact same thing. I had heard that they might not be good for them, but it sure keeps an active little guy occupied for a while. I have said "thank God for rawhide chews" many times.
Thanks for asking this q, after reading the above responses, I am going to be taking it away from him when it gets to swallowing size. My brother gave him a giant R.H. bone last Christmas and he has only been able to gnaw off tiny bits at a time with his little mouth. He is still working on it!

Rawhide is the worst thing for dogs it shreds up into tiny pieces and it actually expands. It can cause impaction in dogs' stomachs and it is very expensive to have surgery to remove the blockage. Better treats for them are pig ears, choo hooves, and nylabones. Just make sure you moderate the amount you give to them because I they eat it too quickly and a lot all at once it will make it very hard to digest. This is why Greenies where recalled they changed the formula and made them chewier and easier to digest!

I currently have a 15 week old Bichonpoo but have owned many dogs in the past. I would never give my dogs Rawhides. It is very easy for dogs to choke on them. It is dangerous when your swallows such a large piece of rawhide. It can get stuck in her throat. Try Nylabones. Do you have a Kong for her?

Absolutely not!! Sorry, but I feel strongly about this. The only safe bones are made by "Nylabone." The others can either cause choking, or they can splinter in their intestines(puncture vital organs).
Try the "Kong"; it's made of hard rubber, and has a hole in the middle, so you can put peanut butter, or her favorite treat in it. It takes quite awhile, and a lot of chewing to get all the goodies out. Sounds like she's 'oral'; that's why I suggested it. Nylabone makes many other kinds of bones. Please check it out. I watched my neighbor's dog choke to death on rawhide...not a pretty sight, but a lesson learned.

They still sell them because not all dogs are the same. I have 2 dogs and my labpointer will chew them and swallow the last piece too soon and choke, where as my Boston Terrier will chew them and lick them till they are all gone and has no problems. I don't ever like to leave my Boston alone with them though, I always like him to be where I can see him. It all depends on how well you know your pets, you know them the manufacterer does not. Hope this helps!

It can cause problems Such as a blockage so I would just be very careful-I don't use them with my dogs but that is just a choice I have made--If you give them to her I would take them away when there is a small enough piece that she can swallow it and watch her carefully while chewing them..

If she's been doing it without a problem up until now she is fine with it. Some dogs tend to get sick eating them or constipated, but you would know by now if her system couldn't handle them.
