Zechariah 12:10—“The One Whom They Pierced”
The Watchtower Teaching. The New World Translation renders Zechariah
12:10, “And I will pour out upon the house of David and upon the inhabitants of
Jerusalem the spirit of favor and entreaties, and they will certainly look to the One
whom they pierced through, and they will certainly wail over Him as in the wailing
over an only [son]; and there will be a bitter lamentation over him as when there is
bitter lamentation over the firstborn [son]” (italics added). By contrast, the New
American Standard Bible renders the critical part of this verse: “they will look on
Me whom they have pierced.”
Now, here is the critical point: In this passage it is Yahweh (or Jehovah) who
is speaking. It is Jehovah God Himself who says (according to the New American
Standard Bible and other legitimate translations), “they will look on Me whom they
have pierced.” Obviously, this means that Jesus is Jehovah. But this goes against
Watchtower theology. So, in order to avoid Jesus appearing to be Jehovah or
Almighty God, the Watchtower Society deliberately altered the text. In the New
World Translation, it is not Jehovah that is pierced. Rather, “the One” (Jesus, as
distinct from Jehovah) is pierced

The Biblical Teaching. There are several points you will want to make in
discussing Zechariah 12:10 with the Jehovah’s Witness. First, it is very clear that
Yahweh or Jehovah is doing the speaking in this verse. Actually, verses 2 through
12 are a single discourse tied to the “Thus declares the Lord [Yahweh]” in verse 1.
Indeed, as Robert Reymond notes, “it is Yahweh who speaks in the first person
throughout this segment of the Oracle and accordingly who specifically states that
the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem ‘will look unto Me whom they
pierced.’”48
Second, we know beyond any doubt that “Me whom they have pierced”
(NASB) is a reference to Jesus Christ. For one thing, John’s Gospel interprets this

reference in terms of Christ’s death on the cross (John 19:37). As well, Jesus is
explicitly described as the “pierced” one in Revelation 1:7.
Third, and most important, there is virtually no justification in the Hebrew
for translating the disputed portion of Zechariah 12:10 as “they will certainly look
to the One whom they pierced through” (italics added), as opposed to “they will
look on Me whom they have pierced” (italics added). Indeed, Reymond notes that
the rendering “they will look unto Me” has the support of “the large majority of
reliable Hebrew manuscripts, the LXX [Septuagint], the Old Latin [version], the
Syriac Peshitta, the Aramaic Targums, and the Greek versions of Aquilla,
Symmachus, and Theodotion.”49 In other words, the majority of the best
manuscripts contradict the Watchtower rendering of Zechariah 12:10.

Very clearly, then, Yahweh Himself positively affirms that “they will look
on Me whom they have pierced.” And since the one “whom they have pierced” is
Jesus Christ (John 19:37; Rev. 1:7), it is plain that this verse points to the common
identity of Yahweh and Jesus. In other words, Jesus is Yahweh. He is just as much
God Almighty as God the Father is.

Trinitarians who point to Zechariah 12:10 do their cause a disservice when they pretend that unitarians (lower-case "u") misunderstand the original Hebrew there. Bible students and scholars have long acknowledged that "me whom they have pierced" is the LITERAL translation of this verse.

But this Scripture is *NOT* to be taken literally.

Clearly, any parent would feel the pain of his child. When Christ Jesus the Son was cut, of course his Father Jehovah felt that pain. Trinitarians and non-Trinitarian Christians alike should well-understand this point, and note that "the Father" remained in heaven when "the Son" was impaled on earth.

(Luke 23:46) Jesus called with a loud voice and said: "Father, into your hands I entrust my spirit." When he had said this, he expired.

Interestingly, bible prophesy shows that *EVEN MARY* the human mother of Jesus would feel this stabbing pain when the human Jesus was impaled. Would Mary constitute a fourth member of a Quadity instead of a Trinity?

(Luke 2:34-35) [The prophet] Simeon blessed them [Joseph, Mary, and the infant Jesus], but said to Mary its mother: "Look! This one is laid for the fall and the rising again of many in Israel and for a sign to be talked against 35 (yes, a long sword will be run through the soul of you yourself)

Rotherham, American Standard Version, Moffatt, An American Translation and Revised Standard Version all use "him" instead of "me" either in the main body of the text itself or in a footnote as an honest alternative.

Sadly trinitarians repeatedly misapply scripture while they insist upon worldly philosophy, Greek paganisms, and quotes from other Babylon-loving Trinitarians to support their unscriptural ideas. By contrast, Jehovah's Witnesses believe that the Scriptures alone quite plainly demonstrate that Jesus and the Almighty are separate distinct persons, and the Almighty created Jesus as His firstborn son.

(Colossians 1:15) the firstborn of all creation

(Mark 10:18) Jesus said to him: 'Why do you call me good? Nobody is good, except one, God.

(Revelation 3:14) the Amen says, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation by God

(Philippians 2:5-6) Christ Jesus, who, although he was existing in God's form, gave no consideration to a seizure, namely, that he should be equal to God

(John 8:42) Neither have I come of my own initiative at all, but that One sent me forth

(John 12:49) I have not spoken out of my own impulse, but the Father himself who sent me has given me a commandment as to what to tell and what to speak

(John 14:28) I am going my way to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am

(1 Corinthians 15:28) But when all things will have been subjected to him, then the Son himself will also subject himself to the One who subjected all things to him

(Matthew 20:23) this sitting down at my right hand and at my left is not mine to give, but it belongs to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father

(1 Corinthians 11:3) I want you to know that the head of every man is the Christ; ...in turn the head of the Christ is God

(John 20:17) I am ascending to my Father and your Father and to my God and your God.

(Deuteronomy 6:4) Jehovah our God is one Jehovah

(1 Corinthians 8:4-6) There is no God but one. For even though there are those who are called "gods," whether in heaven or on earth, just as there are many "gods" and many "lords," there is actually to us one God the Father, out of whom all things are, and we for him

Thanks again for an opportunity to share what the bible actually says about the distinct persons of Jesus Christ the Son and Jehovah God the Father!

Go ahead and try to discredit Jehovah's Witnesses and the New World Translation. Those who know the truth will look on what you say as a lot of foolishness. If you really knew the Bible, you would not say that Jesus is Jehovah because that is wrong. When refuting the Devil's temptations, Jesus told him at Luke 4:8: "It is to Jehovah alone you must worship, and it is to him alone you must render sacred service." Was he telling the Devil that he (Jesus) should be worshiped? No. To Jehovah goes the worship.

At Ps. 83:18, it says that Jehovah is the Most High God. But at Luke 1:32, it says that Jesus is the Son of the Most High. So how could Jesus be Jehovah?

How could Jesus be Jehovah when he (Jesus) called his Father the ONLY true God? See John 17:3.

It is ironic that you should criticize the NW Translation. The KJ Bible has a GLARING addition to it at 1 John 5:7 to try and make the verse appear to have a trinitarian meaning. In modern Bibles, that addition has been removed. Your bigotry of Jehovah's Witnesses has been exposed.

Reply to someone who quotes Bible verses from the KJB to confirm their parroting of their church leader.

First of all, the King James Bible was translated into English in 1607. Skakespeare and his group of writers were among the translators.

Secondly, The word blessed was an expression (coloquial ) in the 1600s and among the folks of during the original writing of the old testament to mean happy on your deathbed.

Today it has been wrongly interpreted to mean rewarded by God, even during our healthy/normal stages of life. It did not mean that during the the old testament nor the new testament days.

Blessed originally meant that special feeling and assurance that you get, only on your death bed, that God was going to take care of you even after your death. Paul had it when he said " I have run a good race."

If we are going to throw scriptures at each other, we need to reference the original Hebrew and Chaldean text for the Old Testament, and the Original Greek Text in the New Testament.

I am very thankful for the King James translation, it opens God's word to us and it is written in a free verse form of poetry. Shakespeare did not copy or talk like the Bible (thy, thine, woudeth, etc). The Bible copies the speaking form of Shakespeare and his group of writers.

First of all - you need to read the book 'Truth in Translation: Accuracy and Bias in English Translations of the New Testament' by Jason DeBuhn (not affiliated with WT) - he rates the New World Translation as being among the most UNBIAS and most ACCURATE of the translations.

Second, the fact that you need to refer to these kind of scriptures to try and support the Trinity proves that the Trinity teaching is not implicit in the bible (nowhere does Jesus come out and say to his followers, Hey, lookit, I am God)

Third, the New World Translation is NOT the only translation that uses the term 'the One' ..here are some examples:

Zechariah 12:10 (Contemporary English Version)
Contemporary English Version (CEV)

the LORD, will make the descendants of David and the people of Jerusalem feel deep sorrow and pray when they see the one they pierced with a spear. They will mourn and weep for him, as parents weep over the death of their only child or their first-born.

Zechariah 12:10 (New Life Version)
New Life Version (NLV)
Copyright © 1969 by Christian Literature International

I will pour out the Spirit of loving-favor and prayer on the family of David and on those who live in Jerusalem. They will look on Him Whose side they cut. They will cry in sorrow for Him, as one cries for an only son. They will cry much over Him, like those who have lost their first-born son.

Would you also call the makers of these translatiaons 'bias'????

Fifth, even if you want to use a translation that says 'me' instead of 'him' or 'the one', does that mean that you take everything that
God says about himself in the bible as being literal? Inasmuch as Jesus Christ was Jehovah’s representative who became “the exact representation of his very being”, in piercing Jesus they could be said to be piercing Jehovah. (Heb. 1:3, NW) When sending out his followers to preach Jesus said: “He that receives you receives me also, and he that receives me receives him also that sent me forth.” (Matt. 10:40, NW) This shows that in receiving Jesus we receive Jehovah who sent him. In like manner, to pierce Jesus is to pierce Jehovah who sent him. It does not prove Jesus and Jehovah are one, any more than it proves Jesus and his followers are literally one.

If the translators of the NWT were bias as you say, then why wouldn't they have 'changed' the rendering of Zech 12:13 as well?

Don't forget also that the basis for JW central doctrines were established from the entire body of scripture and long before the NWT had been published.

RSV:
"So that, when they look on him whom they have pierced."

The context of vs 10 in the NASB mixes the ones being spoken about. It starts out with I, Me, and then Him, all supposedly speaking about the same person.

Again to "prove" the trinity you have to use improper English.

John 1:1 "Word is God" is improper English
John 8:58 "Before Abraham was, I am" is improper English.

Try to tell your English teacher "Snoopy is dog."
Try to tell your English teacher "Before you came, I is here."
Try to tell your English teaher, I, me and him in the same sentence are the same person.

Even the NIV says "the one" in the foot note.

Yes, you are right when you say Jesus is the one being pierced.

Again you can't be a witness for Jesus if you ignore what he taught.

Rev 3:12, 14

I understand your confusion. Jesus is the Son of our God The Father, Jehovah. They are not the same person. Jehovah is"our Father" in heaven. See Isa 63:16. Even the Trinitarian doctrine states that the Son is NOT the Father. Isa 63:16 states that Jehovah is "Our Father" (Not the Son) so this differentiates Jehovah from Jesus.

Now regarding your question, please read the following.

When sending out his followers to preach Jesus said: “He that receives you receives me also, and he that receives me receives him also that sent me forth.” (Matt. 10:40, NW)

Are Jesus and his followers one person or same Son of God?

When Samuel was Jehovah’s appointed judge over Israel the people came requesting a king instead of a judge. Samuel was displeased when they said: “Give us a king to judge us.” But Jehovah told Samuel: “They have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me.” (1 Sam. 8:4-7, AS) In rejecting Jehovah’s representative they rejected Jehovah, in effect; but this did not make Samuel one with Jehovah in a trinity.

When someone rejects God's representative, esp His Son,
those who reject the reprentative, rejects God.

Another example, if you have a kid that you love so much and if somebody kills or hurt your kid, parents sometimes say that "If you hurt my kid, you hurt me. If you kill my baby, you killed me too." Same as what Jehovah, our Father feels when someone hurt his Son, Jesus. Jesus was pierced, Jehovah, the Father was pierced too.

It doesn't mean that they are the same person.

Anyone who's severe approximately his faith must consider that it's the correct one. Otherwise, why might she or he be worried in it? Christians are admonished: "Make definite of all matters; maintain rapid to what's first-class." (one million Thessalonians five:21) A man or woman must make certain that his ideals may also be supported via the Scriptures, for there is just one real religion. Ephesians four:five confirms this, bringing up "one Lord, one religion, one baptism." Jesus didn't trust the contemporary, at ease view that there are lots of roads, many faiths, all main to salvation. Instead, he mentioned: "Narrow is the gate and cramped the avenue main off into lifestyles, and few are those discovering it." Jehovah's Witnesses feel that they have got observed it. Otherwise, they might appear for an extra faith WHo demands to be wake up? I'll percentage my enjoy and commentary to you. For example, I spoke to a BA (born once more) and mentioned he believes in trinity, an extra mentioned he's additionally a BA however one other style, they don't feel in trinity, the 3rd BA i do know mentioned he as good does now not feel in trinity for he's an apostolic BA which believes that God and his SOn are one man or woman. Others engaged in politics (or even ran as president of a nation), a few don't. To a few BA interfatith is okay, to a couple do not. Some might sing praises with loud (rock) song, a few don't comply with such, on account that to a couple BA it ought to be solemn and tranquil. For different it's alright to be a soldier to a couple BA it isn't on account that you'll be compelled to kill individuals. Some BA believed that soul is we ourselves, to a couple BA it's unique from our frame and it's immortal. To a few BA the earth will actually be destroyed, to a couple it is going to now not. And and so on. (I can't percentage all) 1Cor1:10 says: "Now I exhort YOU, brothers, by way of the title of our Lord Jesus Christ that YOU must all talk in contract, and that there must now not be divisions amongst YOU, however that YOU could also be fitly united within the equal brain and within the equal line of proposal" (NWT) I haven't any purpose of attacking you, it is only my commentary considering the fact that we traditionally cross out and percentage the well information to more than a few individuals that's why we had been uncovered to differnt forms of ideals of individuals. I simply uncover it awkward that individuals saved on attacking the ideals of JWs however they themselves don't seem to be in contract with what they real feel and train. Read once more 1Cor one million:10 Why do you appear on the straw in different's eye you could have a rafter in yours. (Matthew 7:three,four). Make definite of all matters (1Thess5:21), make certain of what you real feel.
