ok my mom and dad have let our family fall inactive from the church so i want to prepare a family home evening this monday on the second coming, and of the celestial kingdom. the basic idea i want to get across in my lesson is that we need to work hard to get to the celestial kingdom to be reconnected with my baby brother who died as a toddler. i want them to come back to the church so our family can be reunited, does anyone know some good scriptures, lessons, or talks to help me prepare my lesson? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Tiff....as far as the second coming of christ the promise is that God "will not suffer that the wicked shall destroy the righteous. Wherefore, he will preserve the righteous by his power…Wherefore, the righteous need not fear" (1 Ne. 22:16-17).
There are a bunch of different scriptures you can look up to give a lesson on this;
D&C sections 45, 88, 101, 110, & 133
Matthew chapter 24
And also the book of Revelations

As for teaching about the celestial kingdom you can look up
D&C 78:7 "If Saints desire a place in the celestial world, they must prepare,"
D&C 137: 10 "Children who die before the age of accountability are saved in the celestial kingdom"

As for your family...more often than not people fall away from the church b/c of hurt feelings or b/c "somebody" did or said something...or perhaps it's more than that and they're angry with god for some reason or another. Most of the time, the gospel of the church still ring true in their hearts. Know that by just being an example to them is probably the most you can do for them. I myself have fallen away and slowly making my way back. It just takes time and patience...

Here's a website that helps prepare lessons & talks:

You could also if you want (upto you) read The Family: A Proclamation to the World

Hope all of this is a help!

I think it is a very good thing that you are wanting to do this. And if they are willing to have FHE with you I think that is a very good sign that they are receptive (at least to some degree). I would suggest that you really strive to bring the Spirit to the meeting by doing all you can: such as by fasting and praying and teaching a lot directy out of the scriptures.

It seems to me like Doctrine and Covenants Sec. 137 would be very appropriate and it is very short (only 10 short verses) and then also 128:15-18(or 19 also). These both together wouldn't take up too much time, but I think they are both related to the topic you are trying to present....depending on the length of your lesson you could add many more scriptures or maybe you could just discuss a few more in depth...

Also perhaps the parable of the prodigal son Luke 15:11-32 (and let them know that repentance is always available...that they can come back and get active again - it is very possible!) And/ Or perhaps - From last General Conference - you may want to teach from the talk by David A. Bednar (Sunday afternoon - Oct 1, 2006) available on www.lds.org (that talk pertains to people who have been offended by someone in the Church and tells them "...Not only do we need you, but you need the blessings of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Please come back—now..."

I would definitely recommend that you tell them (from your heart - as plain as you can, and with as much love as you can) why you want this (because you love them so much! ...and you want a wonderful future with them...)...

then also make sure to bear your testimony ...testify of what you know is true!

Good luck, I hope it goes well!

There are several scriptures in the New Testement concerning the "kingdom of God" .
Go to www.biblegateway.com and type "kingdom of God" in the quick search .
Also eternal life is a gift from God and is not earned by being perfect.
About your toddler brother you can tell you parents the scripture which Lord Jesus quoted "Luke18:16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 17I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it."

I, of course, don't know your parents, but it's very difficult to reactivate someone, especailly an adult, once they go inactive from the Mormon church. There are usually deep held problems with the church that are difficult for them to overcome. Some go right the heart of the church's claims.
My heart feels for you as a child in this situation. But I'm afraid, no matter how you phrase your lesson it will fall on mostly deft ears.
Here's the reason. Once a person discovers that what they believe isn't true, or they think it isn't true, it's near impossible to regain that conviction. There's a now deceased Apostle of your church by the name of Neil Maxwell, who used to ask members who were struggling with belief f they had "reached the point of non-rejuvenation." Because, LDS people, once they lose their faith in Mormonism tend not to seek other types of Churches but just go inactive. However, my thoughts are with you and I wish you well.
I would caution you to only listen to people in this forum who understand the LDS culture.

Tiffers:
You have not made it exactly clear what your question is, but I assume that you are wanting to know how to be certain that you get to Heaven to see your brother. If this is true, let me assure you that it is not by how much hard work that we do here on this earth. For if it were, Jesus would not of told us that the way is by faith, and not by works; even though there are certain things that we all must do as God leads our lives. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me." The only way that anyone will ever get into Heaven, is by asking Jesus Christ to forgive them for their sins, and by faith allowing Him to come into their heart. And I believe that when we do such, that He also expects us to attend church services regularly, and let our first devotion be unto Him. If anyone, including myself, never have a desire to go to church, it is a very good indication that we have never truly been saved. For God's Word also tells us that when we are saved, that we are new creatures in Christ Jesus. This means that we will have new desires, which God gives unto us. And one of them will be the desire to go to church, and worship Him, hear his Word regularly, as well as the desire to read it regularly, and live our life as He would have us to. So I believe the main thing that you should be concerned about, is that your family is truly born again and washed in the blood of Jesus from your sins. I can assure you based on what God's Word says, that it is all that will get you to Heaven.

It's great that you're preparing for family home evening. It's easy to become inactive (believe me, I know) even without such tragic circumstances, but its also rewarding to become active again. When I was a kid, I sometimes had to go to church alone because I wanted to go even if my parents did not. Thankfully my leaders were happy to help me get a ride to church. Have faith that things will get better. Despite nearly 10 years of inactivity, my parents and sisters go to church every Sunday and my parents are now Temple Patrons. Just goes to show that you can rediscover your faith, even after years of ignoring it.

Try a search on LDS.org for your topics in conference talks. Most importantly - pray before you begin (by yourself and before you start the lesson) that the spirit will be present to manifest truth. My husband had to "come back" to the church and I know it was only through the spirit that he was able to feel the peace and love the promise of eternal families brings! Realize too it won't happen overnight - it took my husband and I 5 years to make it to the temple...lots of prayers and fasting, scripture reading, church attending...but, have FAITH that Heavenly Father will bless you and your efforts.

The second coming of Jesus is after the Church has been removed and at least 7 years following. most people don't know the difference between the 2 events. the question is are you ready to meet Jesus when he comes to take His bride? He doesn't come back but is in the Clouds to take us with Him to heaven!

i think you need to get back to the basics and understand that you can not work your way into heaven. it is a gift given freely by God to those who are willing to receive it! there is nothing that you can do to earn it!! you need to go and buy yourself a good reliable bible! the king james version is good but may be hard for you to understand because of the language that it is written in. a good bible would be the new american standard version or the New international version. start there to get back on track!!
