Who would win, and what would be the benefit?

I would hope that those responsible for the proliferation of weapons would be annihilated so that the rest of us could try to build a peaceful world, that is, if there's anyone left.

This would all depend on whether the U.S.A and Russia were on the same or opposing sides.
Although the collosal conventional forces of the Soviet Union fell into dissarray and disrepair following its demise, no other country even comes close in terms of nuclear capability to these two. If they were fighting on the same axis, the war would end quickly and decisively, with perhaps a couple of short-range and long-range nukes fired to prevent a drawn out stalemate with the developing country's numerically superior conventional forces.
If they were on opposing sides, there would two scenarios. You could have the Armageddon scenario, with Russia and America firing off their respective nuclear arsenals (Around 11,000 nukes between them) at the enemy and their enemies allies, which would herald a slow but assured demise of the survivors.
Or you could have a stalemate, each realising the implications of a nuclear war, and the fact that a conventional victory by one side(Which would almost definitely go the way of the American axis) would result in a nuclear retaliation by the other.
I think though, for all the rhetoric about China and India's massive military build up, they between them only have a few hundred nukes which would be insufficient to match the cold-war arsenals of Russia and U.S.A. Conventional fighting would occur, but with the spectre of nuclear war would eventually die down.
I think the really interesting question would be what happens after the war, a new world order would definitely emerge, with the winners taking the spoils and reigns of global power, and the losers being relegated to at least a few decades of political subservience as in WW2.

the next big one will start with nukes going off at the same time in Tel Aviv, NY, DC, and London. That will be from Iran's Hamas, next will be freighters in all of the US shipping ports having nukes in lead shielded boxes in the fuel oil tanks of merchant ships. That will effectively take the US completely out of it in the first 30mins of WW3
Now after that North Korea will take South Korea and China will take Japan and as much of Russia as possible. Europe will wisely sue for peace with China as the new World Super power. After things calm down a bit negotiations between the EU and China will take place.
The former US will be divided up between the two based upon the premise that France will not nuke what is left. During these negotiations the EU and China will also plan a lightning take over of the middle east which will also be divided up between the two powers.
When all is said and done there will be peace and technological progress unheard of before.

WW 3 has already started and is a clash of ideologies, with radical islam on one side and free thinking people on the other. I suspect that the free thinkers will win but we will have to kill an awful lot of lunatics first.

It is unfortunate but if WWIII erupts it is probably going to involve nuclear weapons. It will start as the result of a terrorist act and no one will win. One guarantee will be the death of many terrorists and the destruction of the country that harbored them and provided the bomb.

GOD knows better. But apparantly seems ~ mass killings, vast destruction, a new world scenario will emerge with regards to the currently existing super powers

It is happening right now. Thank God the US And Britian are ready to fight and keep it up. All the rest of you countries can kiss my butt. If it wasn't for us the world would fall apart. I spent 30 years in the US MARINES fighting for you and you still don't get it.
