I am 20 and an "only" child (I have a sister who was adopted by my moms second husband because our Dad is mentally ill and said he didnt want her) and my father is schizophrenic. When I was 17 he went off his medicine and ended up in the state hospital eventually. Since he was released, he hasn't been looking for work. He says he can't work because of how the medicine has affected him, but I don't buy it. He held his last job for a few years. He hasn't worked and is trying to go on disability. He has lived with his parents for quite some time, even when he worked, because his medicine needs to be monitored. I know his parents (both nearly 70) wont be around forevor, and I will need to care for him. Anyhow, my question is, should he work while filing for disability? I intend to own a business one day as an Image Consultant and may just have him help me with minor tasks like filing and envelope stuffing etc after that. He is in his mid 40s. Thanks!

He has a doctor who sees him, but when he is checked into the hospital I do not believe there is a policy to help them file for disability. At first his mother was helping him file, and now his sister is.

Your father is probably telling the truth about not being able to work. When yu have schizophrenia, there is generally some difficulty with concentrating and distractability. his medication is probably pretty sedating. Even though he worked before, doesn't mean he will be able to hold that caliber of a job again. he can probably work part time at some point. If he is apply for SSI or ssdi, HE SHOULD NOT WORK.

He should be eligible for SSI if not disability. Social securiy disability is dependant on the number of units that he has worked in his lifetime. If he continues to get denied, he should reapply. They will ususally deniy the first time. but if he is persistent and has been unable to be gainfully employed, then they will probably give it to him.

Good luck in your aspirations of being in business for yourself. Bless you for thinking about caring for your father. Even if he does not express it, he probably appreciates it very much.

My mom is also mentaly ill (bipoler as well as other conditions) and she is also on disibilities (both for meidcal reasona and mental reasons). Even though she is on disibilities, she still tries to do things. She does some voluneteer work, and sometimes does work for under the table pay. If my mom were to get a job, we would be worse off, because not only would they cut her check, we would nto get insurance.

For your father, I think it is ok for him ti stay on disabliities, as long as he is tring to do something. Make sure he is keeping his home and affirs in orders.

As for him working for you, i think it is a good idea. You have to help him, so naturally he should help you, there is noting wrong wth it. Plus it may help his pride. I think it is a good idea.

If your Dad was in a state facility he should have been put on SSI or some kind of dis. payment already? has no one contacted Soc Sec for him? Does he have a regular Dr. care? you need to talk to his dr! do you have power of attorney for him or his parents? is he in charge of his own affairs? you might need a lawyer to explain rights and what you are obliged to do or are responsible as family? he needs to file for dis. and they will have him examined and his record reveiwed for dis.and meds do make a difference especially after years of them!
