WATCHMAN: I was under the impression that 2 Tim. 3:16-17 referred to the Torah.

In Protestant (liberal) theology there are several "middle grounds." There is the notion that the Bible "contains God's word" and also that is can "become God's words." These are of course nuanced meanings of how Scripture communicates God's message through a supposedly imperfect text.

this is from the book "unusual suspect"

"I have people tell me all the time that i shouldn't take the bible so literally. "it's just a book of stories written by men", they tell me There are entire denominations out there that have preachers who get up on sunday mornings and say that. these people tell me,"yeah, but so and so didn't live seven hundred years. come on.' i always respond by asking these people if they believe God is real. and they usually say yes. if they don't, the conversation is pretty much over. but when they say they belive God is real, I will ask them if they believe God wrote the bible. most of the time they will say somthing like"some of it, but not all of it. thats a pretty common perception.
most people out there believe god had a hand in getting the bible down on paper but they believe people got in the way and cuased it to be interpreted the way it has over the past couple of thousand years. Fair enough. I hear this a lot.
when people tell me this i will ask then again if they believe in God. yes, they say. then i say somthing like, when you say you believe in God, you mean you believe in a higher being. "Yes. there are too many unanswared questions in the universe." do you believe then that this higher being created everything? "what do you mean, stephen?" Do you believe God created the earth? "Yes" do you believe God created the moon? "Yes" do you believe God created the stars and the planets and the galexies? "Yes, i believe that. i dont know how he did it , but i beleive he did" Good. Then i will say to them, don't you think it took an incredible amount of power to do all of that? don't you think that the power it took to create the stars and planets and the galexies is so great that we can't even comprehend it?
Usally the person will say i am probably right. and then i ask, do you think that it's possible that the power that could do all of that could also control you mind? "What do you mean?" Do you think it's possible that the same power that created the universe could have enough power to control you and your life? after a few moments of thinking about this thay will usally say they believe that is possibe. thats when i hit them with my point. i ask, don't you think, then, that the power that can do all i just described could have controlled the minds of the men who penned the bible so that every single word on every single page is exactly what that power wanted it to be?

You see i ain't no rocket scientist, but on a very basic, commonsence level, i believe that any power that could create the entire universe could also write a book.

The Bible is the Word of God. I read and study NIV, which was translated directly from the Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic languages.

There is no middle ground.

Nope I dont believe there to be a middle ground. I believe that all scripture is God-breathed. Unfortuantely, ppl like to pick and choose what they want to beleive and follow in the Bible which seems pretty odd to me. However, I do beleive that alot of scripture can spark many different views and interpretations, because of different figurative language used. But no, no gray-area

In the beginning God gave his word, and He kept his word. This is the true meaning of the word of God. All that is written in the bible is God's promise that whenever humankind would be in distress He would come Himself in the human form to save them. New Testament is the account which shows how God had fulfilled His promise, i.e., he kept his word.

It means you can't have it both ways...sometimes people like to pick and choose things out of the Bible as being true and not being true...generally when it personally suits them to...but you can not do that...The Word is God inspired...not part of it...but ALL of it...and no, there is no middle...there is not and isn't either...only an is...

The bible is the word of God, but it wasn't as if he dictated to scribes what to say, as fundamentalists would have you believe. The bible was written over centuries (e.g. tradition) through inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
