didn't get hot for a year and all of a sudden it gets extremely hot. What molectrial changes took place if any?

The glaze on the ceramic mug may have "cracked" (actually, it's technically called "crazing"). This means the heat properties of the mug have changed, and it's no longer going to stay cool when you heat it in the microwave. The glaze may have been a cheap one (likely) or the cup may have been overheated. Sorry, it can't really be fixed.

If the contents of the cup get hot, so does the cup
