You need to eat - your body needs nutrients in order to help recovery - if you don't eat or are not nourished then recovery will be slower and more difficult. Even if it's nutrient drinks for a day but you need to get with eating - even little and often.

Well, if you are having surgery tomorrow, you should be fasting now. You may not be "eating" after the proceedure, but you will have an IV with nutrition getting dripped into your system.

My sister in law had MAJOR surgery last month and her only source of nutrition for several days was what was in the IV drip.

Your vitals will be monitored after your proceedure and when your medical team feels you are ready you will start back with dillute juice, jello and pudding and work your way back to solid foods.

Your question was a bit vague, but I am assuming you'll not be eating AFTER the surgery.

GOOD LUCK

If you don't eat for five days you'll be really hungry. If you are concerned about this, have a talk with your surgeon before the procedure so that he/she can help you be able to eat faster. If you can't or don't want to eat "regular" foods, you should at least have some gatorade and some bouillon (little cubes that dissolve in water), I also found that munching on ginger snaps or crackers after my surgery last year really helped. Again, talk to your surgeon before your surgery and also have the friend/family member who's there with you talk about the food issue too. You shouldn't have to wonder about whether or not you'll be able to eat.

Before I have surgery I fast for two days, so that my bowels are empty. I don't like the medicine I would have to take a day before surgery to clean the bowels. So if this is your reason then you are okay. Physicians don't mind if you had nothing to eat for 2-3 days before surgery, but 5 days is a bit much. You need your strength for surgery.

You're talking about post-surgical intake of foods?

If you're in the hospital or some other surgical recovery facility, then they're monitoring your nutrition, and you're likely being given something through an IV.

If you're at home, you need to follow your doctor's orders strictly. When you're instructed to resume a normal diet, you should do so. If you cannot, you should advise your doctor, so the problem can be determined.

ok so why didn't you eat for 4 or 5 days?! not cool !! nothing will happen at surgery...you're not suppose to eat or drink after midnight the night before...and just rinse your mouth out when you brush your teeth....but when you have any pain killers tomorrow (pill ones not IVs) you'll feel pukey....

What's wrong with you? Are you anorexic? You're not supposed to eat the night before surgery, but going that long is ridiculous. You're not nourished enough right now, and probably dehydrated. Tell your doctor what's happening, and ask if its safe to proceed. And eat something!
