My mom's computer will all of a sudden practically stop everything, and those loading noises, you know, the ones you normally hear?.. they start making a little beat, i don't get it. it's the same thing over and over again. Is this some sort of virus?

It's hard to say for certain. I'd guess one or more of four things, beginning with the most likely: the page file is too small, the hard drive badly needs to be defragged (and probably has a lot of junk on it), the hard drive is going bad, the onboard drive controller is going bad.

Try increasing the size of the paging file first. Then try a drive cleaning utility (the kind that gets rid of junk files for you), then defrag the drive. If not then then try a new hard drive. If not that, then that PC needs a new motherboard.

Those are my best guesses.

Computer viruses don't affect the hardware. I'd guess either the fan is going bad, or the hard drive itself is not spinning as it should. This could be the beginning of the end for that computer. Back up all important data onto disks right away.

I had the same problem & it was the cheap (free) pop-up blocker I downloaded. It would block a pop-up & freeze making the same noise again & again. I guess it could be a virus...do you have Ad-Aware?

Probly have an older hard drive. The loading noises your talking about i have heard while using older/slower HD.

Also could be your fans. freezing up can be caused by overheating. my guess thou is Hard drive.

If your computer is not working properly while you are working on it, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
