I want to look toner, but I heard it was good to start off with high weight low rebs for about a month or two and then switch to low weight high reb.

OK. First, it's "reps" as in "repetitions" which mean how many times you lift the weight. A series of reps is called a set. So..if you are just starting out I would suggest using a lower weight and doing more reps. A good place to begin would be a weight that you could do fairly easily 10-12 times. Then, as you get stronger, after a couple weeks, do what are called "pyramids" or super sets. That is where you start out doing a weight 10 times, then add more weight and do 8 times, then more weight and do 4-5 times. And finally finish with your maximum weight you cand do once or twice. Rest about two minutes between sets. Alternate muscle groups on different days! Never do same muscle groups on consecutive days.

It depends on what you're looking for:

Toning or Calorie Burning - Low weights and high reps

Muscle Building - Highest weights to do 10-12 reps max before the point of fatigue (can't do one more)
