It isn't actually the devil, and they don't sell their soul. What you are referring to is a hoodoo, or American Vodoun, ritual. It is a way to increase a skill that you already have the potential for. You go out, you give an offering (coins or something) at the crossroads, you bring whatever it is you want to be better at, you wait.

Most people cannot even put their finger on what the soul is,let alone sell it.It is like trying to sell the Pacific Ocean.
