No, people, it is NOT. It is based on a novel by Elleston Trevor, and a very small effort at research would have told you that. The original film starring Jimmy STEWART was superb. Do yourselves a favor, and watch that one first.

The original and the re-make were not actual true stories. However there have been AC that have gone down in the desert, especially in WW2, usually due to low fuel, were found, re-fueled and flown out. These were, extremely rare, and almost always either a single seat fighter or light observation A/C. Any AC of the size depicted in the movies that had to go down, (as in crash landing) would not, in reality, be able to be flown out after using surviving wing/engine parts, flight controls etc. Time/tools and the elements would , I think prevent this. The first movie was excellent, the second, crap.
