The best starter violin I've come across is the Stentor. They are usually well-set up and if you put a set of perlon strings on them, they sound great. It the most sold violin in the world, but there are not so many in the United States. You can find them on eBay. Prices vary from $119 to $299. Here is a link to their website which will give you more information on where you can obtain one: www.stentor-music.com/stentor violins.html
You can buy a cheap violin on eBay for $45, but I don't recommend it. The bridges usually are wrong and the pegs are not right. They also don't sound good. I prefer used violins myself and you can get great deals on eBay, at swap meets or on www.shopgoodwill.com but you need to know what to look for and ask questions. Instruments made in Germany, Italy, or Czechoslovakia are usually pretty good. Older Suzuki violins are also nice. You want to make sure there are no cracks, and that there is an intact soundpost. If the strings are old or missing, that is okay, it is easy to get new ones the same goes for the bow - you can get a decent wood bow on eBay for less than $20 or a better carbon fiber bow for about $65.
If you would like any more help, feel free to email me.

It depends on how much money you have to spend on one. Generally an older instrument has a better sound. But you have to check to make sure it doesn't have wolfs. and you should look inside make sure it doesn't have cracks, which can be repaired, but may not be cheap to repair, depending on who repairs it.
There is a new instrument you can usually get price ranging $100.- $200 at most music stores. These are usually from China. It usually comes with case, rosin, bow. It is nice for a beginner, but not the best. If you check shopper, classifieds, yard sales, pawn shops, for a good used instruments sometimes you can find one. Usually an older instrument will have a darker wood and look inside for a label to say where it is from, date made, etc. Make sure it is 4/4 full size. I prefer a german made violin. but everyone has their preferance. Look at the label inside to see if it says copy of a Stradivarious, if it does then it is a copy, the schools used to recommend this type instrument. But the main thing is if it has a good sound. If you buy it used, you could get a violin repair man or luthier, to look it over and see if it needs attention.

Keep your passion for music! Violin is very difficult, but don't be discouraged! Work very hard, above all practice every single day. If it's only for 10 minutes you must practice. Listen to your teacher, maybe taperecord your lessons so you can listen again. Read books on violin and composers-Arnold Steinhardt's Violin Dreams is great, or anything on music. Learn about composers, listen to great recordings-Berlin Philharmonic with vonKarajan conducting, David Oistrakh, Nathan Milstein, Itzhak Perlman. Read the ideas of the greatest teachers of our generation-Leopold Auer, Dorothy DeLay, and Ivan Galamian to start (also Dounis). Always treat your teacher with utmost respect as your teacher will the best most valuable guide you can have. Learn as much as you possibly can about violin, violinists, composers, and just music. It will keep you motivated and inspired as you work on your technique and starting to work on your repertoire. GOOD LUCK!!!
