The only way a Husky is a good protection dog or watch dog is by their appearance. They LOOK scary, to an uneducated observer, but in reality, these dogs, as a breed, are very human-friendly.
Huskies are gregarious, they want to be part of a pack. Humans can be pack members as well as other dogs.
Huskies, like most northern breeds, do not generally deal well with small animals, like cats, rabbits, squirrels, etc. They often will kill such creatures. However, if raised with these animals in the home, some Huskies do successfully live with them.
Huskies are hard to obedience train, in that they do not deal well with repetitive exercises. They are highly intelligent, and if you ask them to sit a dozen times in a row, they will find a way to make the sitting more 'fun'...by dancing, howling, spinning in a circle...or they might simply walk away, as they are bored. To train a Husky, you must keep the exercises fun and mentally stimulating.
Huskies CAN NOT be allowed outside off-leash or outside of a fence. They WILL run off. And ignore commands to come back. Huskies have been found 50+ miles from home...the day after they ran off! Other Huskies that run off get hit by cars, shot by farmers/hunters, or simply are never found by their owners.
Huskies shed/dig/howl.
Huskies do not eat as much as other similar sized dogs. They are highly fuel efficient and gain weight quickly.
Huskies need a great deal of exercise. They make wonderful jogging partners. They also are great sledding dogs, or can pull wheeled-rigs or bicycles when there is no snow.
Look into Husky Rescue if you are considering getting one. There are hundreds of Huskies waiting for a good home, as people often get these somewhat difficult to own dogs, thinking they are 'cute', then when reality strikes, they no longer want the hassle.
Even if you choose to get a pup and can't find one in Rescue, ask Rescue for a list of responsible breeders. Huskies have many inherited diseases that you will want the breeder to have tested the parents for.

I have a 6 year old Siberian Husky. She's the best! But she is high maintanence. We live in a warm climate and I keep her inside so we have to exercise her a lot~ she has a lot of friends in the area so she runs and plays with them everyday. She is on a special food~ she can't handle any by-products in her food or soy. They 'blow a coat' twice a year which is a pain. We have to brush her twice daily when this happen and we could stuff a mattress with the amount of fur she looses.
They are smart, problem solvers, diggers, climbers and they love people. They are not watch dogs and love to be with you as much as possible.
Don't get one just b/c they are so stunning to look at~ love the breed for their quirks too. You can visit Allegro Husky, they have a web site. If you type in allegrohuskies it should come up. They have a lot of info.
The older my husky gets the more laid bakc she is. Oh yeah~ Don't ever let them off their leash. A lady I know from Scotland who used to breed them called them Horizen dogs, b/c when they are loose they will disappear over the horizen.
My doggie is irreplaceable though. By far my favorite breed ever!

They are very needy in the exercise department if you do not play with them or take them for a walk everyday they are liable to destroy house. They make great jogging companions. The major problem is if you plan on leaving it in the back yard you should have high fences and buried wire to prevent them from escaping they like to go hunting, there a stories of them coming home with the neighbours cat,( try to explain to your neighbour where there cat mittens is.) Also it is suggested since their pack instincts are strong that you get it a companion if you plan on leaving it for a long time during the day(preferably another husky). They are pretty good with children as well but not great.

There are two general kind of Husky Dogs. Malamute(large),and Siberian(medium). They were used by the Inuit people for travel and protection. They were originally brought to the Arctic by Icelandic Explorers. Then bred to Wolves to make them stronger, but more unpredictable. They are very personal dogs but can be trained to be friendly towards people. They are often bred to Grey Hounds by racers today for the Iditeraude Alaska race.(Siberians) Anything else?
