Immigration will remain to be an unresolved issue until our legislators are able to provide the mechanism to strengthen and secure our borders. Moreover, it should also resolve issues that make it increasingly difficult for deserving illegals to be legalized. This is the big challenge for the Democrats who are now in control of Congress. Aside from the war issue, the issue on immigration had been a big drawback for the GOP. The Democrats will certainly have to make a serious attempt to address this thorny issue.

The way it is currently written, it would not be passed by Americans. It will more than likely be hidden in some other bill, that has to be passed. There is LITTLE public support for this type of reform. The majority do not want the illegal population here rewarded with legal status. They want incentives taken away which will cause the illegals to leave on their own. Unfortunately, that is not something the Feds are willing to do. It might accomplish an economic recovery and the backlash (allowing illegals to cause the damage in the first place) from voters would cripple those in DC for decades to come.

If they were to attempt it, it would only be after getting a democrat president in office. It's too much for them to risk angering so many people by trying to pass legislation even now that they have the majority in Congress. Further, they are trying to present a more "middle of the road" image to America, by toning down their stance on issues like abortion and illegal immigration to win over the more conservative population. Several democrats who were recently elected are known to be pro-life, anti-illegal, or both.

When Democrats assume the majority of Congress, they must prioritize the Immigration problem and make reforms for what is good for the country.

Probably, but I suspect you've noticed how popular the topic isn't.

Some of the Democrat Senators are now saying the Senate Bill is 'too big' (my own view, so I appreciate it) and they want to downsize it. They are speaking of the going forward guest worker program part. However, that means discussions etc., and shifts alliances. I expect bills will start moving around in January, although it is barely possible the Republicans will want to use their majority in the waning days of the session. I doubt it. I always expected it to begin again in the new session.

I always felt the better match was with screened legalization and border security on one side, against the guest worker types, because once here, EVERYONE inside the border benefits from not having life here ruined. That means going forward you could expect the coalition to live up to its part from self-interest. Big business's interest is to flood the labor market with cheap labor drawn by taxpayer funded services and education. THAT is by nature against the interest of everyone but the elite.

However, inability to compromise may be a problem. Business doesn't have that problem, because they can take a little bit now, and keep coming back to nibble a little bit more, over time. Their lobbyists haunt the Capital full time.

NO
they cant figure out how to please everybody and they cant raise the money they need by raising taxes
no matter how they cut it they cant define "middle class " what salary cut amount will "work" if its say below 75,000 annual salary =middle class and above =the nasty "rich" there will be chaos...too many that live in CA /east coast and major cities that earn 75K are just BARELY getting their housing, utilities, transportation and state taxes covered WITH LITTLE left over for savings/insurance, medical and tuition...
75,000 annually in a different location with less state/city taxes may provide a very comfortable lifestyle...its not always what one makes its where they live and the expenses their families face...
So NO the DEMs will hew and haw and never get a plan let alone act...far better to complain that they aren't getting any cooperation from the evil Bushies/Rep's

Immigration is not the problem needing reform; it's illegal immigration and the wear/tear on our society.

I believe that unless you are Native American, you are an immigrant yourself. Notice I did not say Native Mexican, those lines were drawn a long time ago. We have established governments now and everyone should abide by the laws (i.e. waiting in line like everyone else). MASSIVE ILLEGAL immigration primarily from one country is a problem. Illegally, they'll work for minimum wage or less, which in turn effects all our salaries negatively by making Americans seem less valuable or replaceable.

you've got to be kidding.. there will be no immigration reform. all they need to do is enforce the laws they already have. throw a few corporate big shots in prison for hiring illegals, and the illegals will leave on their own because they won't find a job.

I don't think they would dare go against the American public's wishes at the current time. A majority of Americans want illegal immigrants stopped, and them deported. Seeing as the American Voters spoke volumes by voting out the guys that weren't listening to them in the most recent election, I think they might either not touch it right away, or go with the majority and take care of the illegal immigrants.

Deport!!
