Improvement with Zoloft may not be seen for several days to a few weeks. You should expect to keep taking it for at least several months.

It depends how long you've been on it. It does take a while to get the full benefit (up to 6 weeks) and it's important to take it consistently as prescribed during that time...otherwise you can't really tell if it's something that is going to work for you. When an antidepressant does work, it feels like you've been given a miracle. The relief from true depression is worth trying to find the right medication. Not only can it help, it can make your whole life feel different, the whole world feel brighter, it lifts the darkness.
I'm bipolar and have struggled with deep depressions since early childhood.
Now if you've been on Zoloft a long time, you do not want to stop it suddenly or you will probably have unpleasant physical symptoms. This can be avoided by having the doctor very slowly lower your dose.

Do not stop taking it. If you skip it, it will make you feel worse!!!!You will go through withdrawl symptoms.
Why do you want to stop taking it? The doctor wouldn't have put you on it if you didn't need it. Zoloft works with the chemicals in your brain, so please do not stop taking it or skipping it.

You might not think it's working but try to look at it this way....maybe you would be much worse if you weren't taking it at all. Talk to your mom about it and tell her you want to go back to the doctor. Tell the doc that you just don't feel like it's helping you.

I hope you get your meds all straightened out and you start feeling happy again soon. Depression sucks bad and I feel sorry for you. You are too young to have to go through such horrible feelings. Big hugzzzz to ya

my god you're 12??? I'm sorry to hear that you even have to take that medicine. well zoloft is an SSRI, a special type of antidepressant. sudden stopping can cause an acute (sudden) psychotic episode. i know this because i've worked as an ER nurse for 15 years. talk to one of your parents about this. if you aren't comfortable doing that get ahold of your doctors office and tell them. there are ways of weaning off of it and other drugs you can take, but as one other posting said here, it takes a while for the medicine to work so you do have to give it time. whatever you do....DO NOT STOP abruptly!! Good luck to you sweetie and hope you give the medicine a chance....it really can help you!!!

I would certainly recommend that you tell your mom and the doctor how you are feeling but don't stop taking this drug suddenly. Tell your doctor and your mom you want to stop and why..because as you said you don't feel like it is working. There are other drugs that may make you feel a lot better OR if your mother and your doctor know you don't want to take the drug, they may agree to that and slowly taper you off of it.
It hurts me to see a 12 yr old say they have "chronic depression". You are not a disease but you are a person who is worthy of love and respect and you hang in there please! If there is something bugging you talk about it to someone you trust that you know will not disappoint you. You might talk to a school counselor or teacher you trust if you don't feel like you can express yourself at home or to the doctor.

I was on zoloft for 2 years & had to go off it very slowly - I had VERY BAD withdrawals. You need to talk to your doctor to perhaps try something else if it is not working. Be careful if you decide to do it by yourself - BUT I really don't think you should give them up without help from your doctor - good luck

Withdrawal from an antidepressant is pretty bad. You think you are depressed now!! If Zoloft is not working, you should try another one. If you are determined to go off it, you have to wean yourself, like going down to 50 mg./day for a week or two, skipping a day, etc. You just about cannot go cold turkey.

Hydroxyzine is very mild drug I have not seen used in forty years, but I doubt it would interfere with Zoloft.

You will go thru a very a painful withdrawal. If you are determined to go off the medication talk to the doctor that prescribed it to you. They will help you decrease it safely.
