Im asking because im under the impression more people do it for the fat pay cheque than any actual good causes that may come of it. But i only know 1 person and they said they wanted to see the world.Ive heard alot of people say that they never expected to go to war,and that they joined because the money was good and are ofcourse gutted because they were sent away to fight.

What fat pay check are you talking about? We enlisted don't get that much pay!! Geesh!! these civilians !! THE NERVE!!

I joined to see the world! and I got my fair share of it. Still in the service! Seriously, I joined to get a roof over my head, and sleep at nights without worries, and finished my degree.

GO NAVY!! hehehe..=)

What fat paycheck? How much do you think these guys take home? Can you live on $1200 a month with a family? The military isn't a money maker. Not for enlisted people and enlisted members are the one's doing the all the work. I don't know why people choose to enlist n the ARMY in particular. My husband is AF. We don't get a FAT paycheck even all the times he deploys. He joined to serve his country.

(I joined the air force not army but here if it still applies):
I joined in October 06 and don't leave to BMT until February 07. The main reason I joined was not for money but for a change of life. After being exposed to some military like and seeing what there is it just seemed like something I wanna do. Yes you can travel like some people could dream and do things they couldn't either. I joined for a different, more interesting life to sum it up; and so far i'm happy.

LMAO,, when I went into the military, an E-1 made $79.00 a month. That's 39 one dollar bills in your hot lil hand on the 1st and 15th of the month. After laundry expenses there was about $15.00 to last about two weeks (or $1.00 a day) So I don't think the fat pay check had much to do with why I joined.
As a kid fresh out of high school, and with no letter from Harvard in the mail, the military at least had a future to offer, and pulling lumber on a green chain didn't.

Well in the US the pay for an enlisted service member is not very good. You can get a fat bonus and good benefits, but the base salary is nothing to brag about. There is job security and stuff like that which is nice.

I am joining because I beleive my country is worth fighting for.

I joined the Air Force cause I had a draft number of 63 and didn't feel like being drafted into the Army.
No fat pay checks in the military and probably never will be.

i joined the army because it was the only thing i ever wanted to do for as long as i can remember. it seemed like the place to be. after high school colledge was not an option. guess i could have stayed at the canning factory for a little better than min. wage but life overseas was a bit more enticing. there was no war to go to at that time. i spent 3.5 yrs in germany. traveled to other countries met alot of good people. i wouldnt trade it for nothing.

Fat pay check? Who's Army you talking about? I was in JROTC in high school so joining ROTC in college seemed like the thing to do. The Army paid for part of my college and I'm gladdly repaying them what I owe. I'll probably continue to serve after my obligation is up. I was lucky enough to be born in the US and will gladdly serve in the Military so my children (someday), and hopefully their childrens children will be born in the best country in the world.

joined the military in 1997. it was a life long dream, to follow in the the family male tradition of serving my country, i joined the navy first as this was the only branch i could get in to at the time. to tell you the truth it wasn't for the money, the glory, or anything like that it was to serve my country be it in time of war, or in peace time, i felt it was my duty to this, and i am honored to be able to do it.I just hope that i can instill the principles that the males in my family in stiled in me in to my kids so that they will see the military is not a bad thing and will look upon it with the respect and patriotism that our family has for it, and hopefully join when they are at an age to do so.

I enlisted back in my junior year of high school in 1968. And I did it for the simple fact that my friends were going, I was tired of the news reports every evening showing the druggies in Haight-Ashbury, the fools spitting on our military in airports, basically wanted to do my part and was proud to do so. It saddens me to see people so filled with a sense of entitlement these days, not willing to contribute to the health of the body politic for their freedom that was secured by the sacrifice of others.

Believe this, there was no fat paycheck for me. I could have earned much, much more on the outside, but I come from a family of ex-military and law enforcement people and learned early on that my freedom did not come without a price.
