Well...I'll take a gander...but I can only offer a surface explanation with no context...

Laugh at someone (or tell a joke) and people will laugh with you - because people like lighthearted people and people one can feel good around...for example, people who make you laugh... but 'share' (and I'm taking liberties with the meaning of the word 'share') could mean when you share your sobby stories and misery...of course you will sleep alone because nobody likes a downer.

Gosh. I don't really think that's a great explanation. Sorry. Don't give it too much attention.

I only know this version.
Laugh and the world laughs with you - cry and you cry alone.

People like being happy... so hence people will be around you when you are happy.

When your sad, crying upset.. people tend to keep there distance.. Hence the feeling of being alone.

Here's a site to look up quotes: http://education.yahoo.com/reference/quotations/
"laugh and the world laughs with you" refers to if you are happy and laughing everything in the world around you will seem better.
and it goes on to say "weep and you weep alone" meaning of course that life goes on so you should make the best of it.
It is true that misery loves company but not that company loves misery.
QUOTE:
Laugh, and the world laughs with you;
Weep, and you weep alone,
For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth,
But has trouble enough of its own.

ok, I don't think that's how it goes. I think it's "laugh and the world laughs with you, cry and you cry alone...and what it means is if you laugh, people want to be around you, but if you are a sad, depressed person, people will leave you alone because they don't want to be sad.
