Half of my family is French(, and half of it is Slovakian). I currently live in the United States so no one speaks French. My mom only knows a little bit so I can't learn much from her. My grandfather on my moms side knows a lot of French, but he lives on the other side of the country so I can't see him often. (About 1 time every 1-3 years.)

Try Bonjour.com: http://www.bonjour.com/

or http://www.frenchtutorial.com/

Both are good places to start. And if you just want to translate blocks of text use AltaVista's Babel Fish Translator:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/

If you ever get money to invest in learning French, look into Rosetta Stone. It's très magnifique!
