Don't give the dog human meds. Has he been to a vet, do you know for sure he needs amox and if that is the med that is right for his infection. If he doesn't need an abx or if amox is not the right one he can get sicker anyway. I know when my dog was bit and had a skin infection he got a doggie version on clindamycin not amox.

While the vet may very well use Amoxicillin for whatever problem your dog is having, the dosage might be quite different. Remember too that when you start an antibiotic a regiment must be followed for the full time prescribed (usually 10 days). If you change things in the middle of those 10 days or stop completely the infection is likely to return but this time Amoxicillin resistant.
So all in all it just isn't worth taking the chance.

As a side note; where we have so many in our care here I always keep a 10 day supply of Amoxicillin on hand, just so that I can avoid an emergency situation. Even if it turns out that the dog doesn't need an antibiotic, it doesn't hurt to have started the regiment a day sooner. BUT this is still Amoxicillin priscribed by my vet, and done with his full knowlage.

Yes, your vet did the all the right things. If he had not taken a sample of the junk in your dogs ear, then I would be suspicious. Ear infections in dogs can be serious and need treatment. As a groomers helper, previously, I saw dogs with terrible ear infections. One dog actually had to have surgery from her infections, resulting in deafness, due to infection. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic and is a good way to combat ear infections. Keep your dog on the medication as your vet instructed. Because you have a suspicious feeling about this vet, I would suggest you look for a vet you feel good about. I would recommend that you call a few vets and interview them before you take your dog to them. Most will do this without charge. I did this and found a great vet without having to constantly change vets til I found one I liked. Saved me and my dogs a lot of trouble.

you should consult your vet but for the people saying that you can't give a pet the same meds as a person. I know a woman that had a 10 yr old boy and a 3 year old dog. Both got sick, took one to the vet took the other to the doc (don't be retarded you know who went where so don't ask). Any way both were prescribed amoxicillin and both had the same dosage. She asked her doctor later if they were the same and he said that even if she mixed up the pills from either bottle it was still the same medicine.

If the dog has taken it before, yes.A dog that size would need 500 mg. twice a day.I buy amoxicillin from a vet supply catalog. It's labeled for use in aquariums, but it's the same thing you would get from a vet or a human doctor. My vet says it's fine to use, especially if you don't have the money to go to a vet ,or don't have a way to get there. But if the dog doesn't respond in 72 hours, you should call a vet.Good luck and I hope your dog is feeling better.

No you can't give a dog any human antibiotic. The amoxicillin comes in a strength for pets, but must be given by a vet.You can give your pet the penicillin injection that can be purchased at any feed store, and the dosage is 1/2 cc on a 3 cc syringe per 3 lbs, twice a day.You can give this in a muscle,or just under the skin at nape of neck.call your vet for correct dosage for the 100 lbs.,as figured for 100 lb dog the dosage above may be too much at one time.

Why would you do that? You wouldn't give another human medicine that was prescribed for you, then why would you even CONSIDER giving it to your dog? DON'T DO IT. Amoxicillin is meant to fight off infections in the throat and was made for humans not dogs.

You really should not give any over the counter meds to your dog. An antibiotic needs to be prescribed by a vet just like you need your dr. to when you are sick. Each antibiotic is used for different reasons.

Dogs can take amoxicillin, BUT, do you know what is wrong with your dog? Is the medicine expired? If so it will be like taking nothing. It is the best to take your dog to the vet, and if you cannot afford to take him or her at least call them for advice.

STOP!!!!! First of all what makes you think he needs a penacillin type drug? Second, if the dog isn't worth the cost of the proper medicine to you, get a virtual pet. Many drugs are species specific, while aspirin can be shared with dogs, non-aspirin pain killers will shut down their nervous system, permanently. Many spices in human foods will destroy a dog's pancreas. Grapes or raisins can destroy their kidneys. Too much chocolate can clog their digestive tracts and acts like cocaine to their bodies. They just recently discovered a sugar substitute in low fat deserts also can kill your dog. You need to follow your vet's advice if you care anything about your pet. Human food and meds for humans, dog food and meds for dogs.
