Now that the holiday season is gearing up, so are the charities asking for money. There are so many people who need help and have so little.

What are some charities you give to during the holiday season or all year round?

Some examples I know of:
thehungersite.com

onlineredkettle.org--a virtual version of the Salvation Army red kettles

Secondharvest.org

My local Barnes and Noble and Borders are both sponsoring donating books to local shelters or direct donations to Firstbook.org

Samaritan's Purse is one that I give to regularly. The local newspaper's Christmas basket. A friend & I also do something together, we purchase new comforters (quilts) & distribute them to the homeless in preparation for very cold nights. When I can absolutely afford to, I prepare a christmas hamper for at least one family in my area, whom I know will not spend a good one, and place it at their door in the wee hours of christmas morning. All of these I do anonymously, of course. I am not looking for recognition or thanks, I think if we can all do a little, it will help to alleviate a lot of hardships. A big plus is it makes you feel really good to give.

I give my time by volunteering to Townspeople, a non-profit HIV Housing organization. We supply the HIV community here in San Diego a bi-weekly rental list, and are in the process of providing low income properties with subsidized rent. They could always use donations!
