It's like the air force, but its not. The security is so tight, that the commanders at the advanced aircraft testing facility have abosulute power. Your rights will be gone, it's not like a public agency where they're concerned about employee safety, rights or anything close to contemporary business ethics.
There's pros and cons to how its operated....of course we need a secret facility to test our advanced aircraft, but the downside, is the impact on the employees working there.

You go where you're assigned to and Area 51 has nothing to do with the military even though they have MPs for security, but that I believe is through the CIA since that's a highly guarded facility and the only way you can get there is by plane to discourage people from trying to figure out what's in there. The Air Force has nothing to do with what they do at Area 51.

Very few military personell work at Aria 51, mainly civilian engeneers working on new genoration stuff. It is nothing more than a test facility, and a chemical waist dump.

You don't have to be in the Air Force to get in Area 51. If you really want to visit Area 51 you must do the following. You must go outside every night for 1 year and shine a flashlight up into the night sky. You must also be hopping on 1 foot while you are shining the light up in the sky. As you do this your must repeat over and over this statement " O wha ah phool I M". Trust me.. someone will come for you.

Spend about 5 or 10 years in speacle forces, or 5 to 10 years as a test pilot, or own the company that provides the private jets to the Janet terminal.
Additional details: to all of you morons who say Area 51 does not exist watch TLC or Discovery channle some time and get an education.

Area 51 is not an Air Force facility. The closest you would get is Nellis AFB

let's just say that there is this area that you are looking for which may or not be controlled by the U.S. . posting this question is not a good way to get there, it could come up to bite you in the butt.
to answer the question is to become VERY proficient in math, physics, history, science, biology and computer science (just to name a few). believe it or not you're family history will be looked at, for a few generations back. the smarter that you make you're self, the better that you will make it to the elusive area 51.
good luck, but it doesn't look good right now.

after a few years of investigations into your past by OSI, FBI, and a few other orginizations whose acronyms are classified you might have the opportunity to work there. you wont live there. youll travel there in a chopper with no windows every day. you won't know for sure whether or not youre in area 51. you wont be allowed to ask anyone what their job is and they wont be allowed to ask you either. if you work on something big, you will work only on a tiny piece of it. you won't know what the whole project is about or see any of it except for the tiny doodad you work on. a man in a suit will come take that when its complete and you wont see it again.
