We go to a little church that does not have any financial trouble that we are aware of. We are huge Gosphel for Asia fans and currently support one missionary and one child. We were thinking of diverting all of our support of the local church to GFA Missionaries. What are your thoughts?

Your primary giving should be to your local church body. Anything above your "normal" giving pattern can be given to various parachurch organizations.

There is not a New Testament requirement for a tithe. Paul tells us, "Each of you must give what you have decided in your heart, not with regret or under compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver." (II Corinthians 9:7)

The caveat I should mention comes later: "Elders who handle their duties well should be considered worthy of double compensation, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, "You must not muzzle an ox while it is treading out grain," and "A worker deserves his pay." (I Timothy 5:17-18)

Therefore give as you decide in your heart to give to the local body. Only then should you consider giving outside the local body.

There is a reason that your church doesn't have any financial trouble. Most people there do their duty to the church.
They have a mortgage to pay, lights and even printing up pamphlets... they are accustomed to having a certain amount of money available to them. Don't screw the church just to feel better about some helping some orphans.

Diversion of God's tithe from the local church is not a good plan based on Biblical precedent. Offerings, of course can be sent to support this mission if you wish.

Supporting your local church is important as the sayig goes "charity begins at home" however, if you feel God wants you to put your money to other charities, then go ahead. When all said and done, you sound like a generous person and I'm sure you'll do the right thing.

tithes - 10% go to your local body of worship

offerings, over and above the tithe, can be used for special missionaries

nowhere does the Bible say we do not have to tithe if the church is not having any financial trouble

1 Tim. 5:17 Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labor in the word and doctrine.

1 Tim. 5:18 For the Scripture says, You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain, and, The laborer is worthy of his reward.

It is speaking about them that labor in the word and doctrine, my personal feelings is it would be some one within your local Assembly.

Pray and ask God what He would like you to do. You are stewards in charge of the blessings you have, to be a good steward, you need to give where God would have you give, not just to a church - but where ever the Spirit leads you.

We should be giving to our "store houses" that is your home church..any love gifts can go to outside the church you attend but your tithe should be to the one that you are attending. Who knows maybe it is your tithe that is making the electric bill and if it goes so too do the lights.
