Most churches will give you a statement at the end of the year showing your donations for tax purposes. It is always good to write a check for an additional record if you need it. It is practical to claim a tax deduction because it gives you more money to donate if you wish.

Yes. My understanding of these really confusing IRS rules is that cash church donations up to a certain amount can be deducted without the need to present receipts just in case they audit you. Above a certain range you had better have a receipt tp vousch for it. The exact max value I'm not sure about (probably less than $1000 per year) but ask your accountant. Of course , without receipts and the fact that most people give small amounts evey time they attend a service of between 1 and 20 bucks, just estimate the amount you donated over a year's time and write that down. A mortgage is the single largest deduction people take advantage of during tax time and if you don't have one, and unless you have 5 kids or something, it probably is better and easier for you to take the standard deduction instead of itemizing. Again, consult your accountant or use tax software to find out either way.

Although I don't believe in tithing but, instead, giving from the heart, You can deduct contributions to any recognized non-profit organization. Make sure, though, that you get a receipt for anything 250.00 or more
