I'm a native Atlantan, and I love my hometown. Having said that, most of Atlanta is not walking friendly. There are several neighborhoods that are pedestrian, but you will have to take a car to get there and to get back home/hotel. The attractions are spread out through town. The walking friendly neighborhoods of Atlanta are: Inman Park, Grant Park, Decatur, and the Virgina Highlands. The main attraction in these areas are the great restaurants and shops. These areas are not particularly close to the rest of the main attractions of Atlanta: The aquarium, the GA Dome, the High Museum of Art, Zoo Atlanta, The CNN center, The World of Coke, Fernbank Museum etc. etc.
If you want mostly a walking type adventure Savannah is more your speed. Savannah is a well planned out city of small squares. Most of their economy is based on tourism, so they really know how to show visitors a good time. Savannah is on the coast, so it is cold as h e ll during the winter months. I've found it unpleasant to walk when it is that cold (and I've done it) a long period of time. Savannah is the kind of place that you could walk everywhere you wanted without a car, which is really nice.
Savannah is also noted for it's huge St. Patrick's day festival. The entire town is bombarded from tourists from all over to celebrate the day in wild style.
Another bonus: Savannah is home to SCAD: the Savannah College of Art and Design. Meaning, there are some great art galleries in town.
Best of Luck!!!

If you want a walkable city, I would not recommend Atlanta. Yeah we have a lot of great activities, but they are spread out, and you would have to take MARTA or drive everywhere. Savanah is gorgeous, not as many attractions, but a great area near the wharf to stay, and you could walk through the wharf area easily. Also, right off the wharf area is a lot of historic areas, with tours and carriage rides. If you want big city go Atlanta...smaller southern charm go Savannah.
