I'm wondering if this is possible as my MP3 player/recorder has a line in socket but no mic socket. Would this work? Or would I need a special kind of microphone?

It depends upon if the microphone has a variable electrical impedance (the total opposition to alternating current by an electric circuit) level as a microphone socket technically uses a different impedance level to a line-in. However most microphones do have a variable impedance level so there is a good chance this will work. The impedance is often stated (in Ohms) on devices which do not have a variable level.
I would try it, if it works it works, if it does not it does not and I don't think one device will damage the other.

Check the PC manual for the microphone reqmt. (ohms) but it is usually OK.

no you cannot you need a pre-amplifier . You can only connect it to something that says Mic.

you can get an adapter. It's like a jack, but as an extension.
