1. Clove Oil was recommended in the movie Marathon Man.
2. Gargling you mouth with warm water and salt is the dentist approved method.
3. Xytol is an ingredient in sugarless gums that helps to fight cavities. Putting a "bandage" of this gum over a open hole in the tooth keeps out cold air, and other problems. When I used this method I was able to eat hot soup and ice cream with no pain.
4. Typical over the counter medications like Aleve will help with the pain.
5. Ora Jell is used to treat teething babies. If you inject Ora Jell into your cavity it will numb up the sensitive tissues.
From personal experience Trident gum works the best for me. I couldn't get an appointment for a while and I went for an entire week with gum bandages. Of course you want to make sure the area is clean first so have her brush her teeth. Most of the pain of a cavity comes from external influences, anything from incoming air to food can irritate it.

I am in the process of a horrible toothache myself but you can lessen the pain by taking a couple of tylonal (or advil, asparin, whatever you use for headache or pain. brew a cup of tea (Good strong tea, leave the tea bag in) slowly drink the tea holding the tea in your mouth a few secounds before swollowing, this is as good, in my opinion as the warm salt water remedy, which is also good. you can also take the tea bag out of the water and squeeze the excess water out and place the tea bag directly on the troubled tooth, there is something in tea, tannic acid that toughens up the gums and acts like a "number" you can also take an asparin and place it on the tooth too., until it desolves. It helps to be in a reclined position , prop your head up with pillows , make sure , even though it may hurt, to brush your teeth softly and use a full strength antiseptic mouth rinse several times a day to keep bacteria out of the sore tooth. avoid any cold drinks. even breathing with your mouth open can cause the tooth to throb with the intake of air. I sympathize with you, and believe me I tried it all . If you want to resort to an over the counter remedy Oragel medicated toothache swabs have given me relief too, they look like cotton buds(Q-tips) you snap the tip off and swab the other end that has a measured amount of novocaine in it to the bad tooth , good luck.

There is a pressure point between your thumb and pointer finger, tell her to slightly pinch that area and stroke back and forth, it helps relieve the pressure on the tooth. And tell her to use a pain reliever that reduces swelling like Ibuprofen or naproxen, not Tylenol or aspirin. Good Luck
I feel for her, toothaches are horrible.

let an asprin melt on it. don't do more than one every two or three hours and not more than 6 a day. this is only for the pain and the tooth will have to be pulled or filled by some dentist. if let go to long infection may start. at least go to a doctor for antibiotics if this happens.
