Vista is designed with a "legacy" environment which it allows it to run programs designed for XP, 2000, and other earlier versions of Windows. While it will probably not be perfect, so far I have not found anything I have tested that has not worked. So there is a very good chance your XP games will work with Vista.

Yes, all games compatible with XP are backwards-compatible with Vista. Direct-X 10 will allow you to play Direct-X 9 and before (reasonably, of course) games, but without software emulation you won't be able to play any new Vista-oriented Direct-X 10 games on Windows XP because 9.0c doesn't have thread arbitration.

Yes.if the program doesn't work you can run it in xp environment.
