what does "the less you talk, the more you're listened to" by Abigail Van Buren mean?

The first poster is a bit off in his interpretation of the quote. It doesn't mean "if you're talking, you're not listening." It means that people who "run off at the mouth" aren't taken seriously, while those who are more thoughtful and only speak when they have something meaningful to say will get more respect and their words will have more impact with people.

Some people talk, mostly to hear the sound of their voice, if they do it too often people ignore them. however, if they control their urge to talk a lot, people won't tune them out.

A similar attitude is held by some people on Yahoo Answers, in that, they feel that people ignore Long posts, and only read post of 4 lines or less.

Listen wisely to what the person is saying, you never know, you might learn alot of things you never knew

For one thing it means that if you're talking you're not listening. And if you listen more you have more information and can ask more informed questions.

it is an observation. a wise person only speaks when what they have to say is important. no idle chatter.
