No, I know a 15 yr old who's name is Gilbert (as is his dads & grandpas) and he is popular and people do not make fun of his name. His nickname is Gil and it's not bad. It just takes some getting use to. It all depends on who goes to school with him. It shouldn't be bad if he goes to school starting with kindergarten because then the kids won't know any better.

I think that it is cute. There are so many manes coming out now (ie, Edward and Bob) that are becoming more popular every day. I think that Gilbert is a cute name. Even if he gets made fun of, it will be his personality and who he is that will make home who he wants to be. I wouldn't worry about what people think. I like it. Everyone has a different preference in names. I like new names. My husband likes older names. My sister likes geeky names and her husband likes sophisticated name. Who cares what people think. It isn't the name that makes the kid, it is his personality.

I think of the movie "Gilbert Grape", but not in a bad way. I think it is a good name, he can go by Gil if he wants. Ignore the people that laugh.... they are in no position to make fun unless they gave birth to him themselves.

Gilbert Godfrey, one of his scenes from the Problem Child movies. Sorry. I really don't like it, but that's just a personal preference. I don't like the names Madison or Makenzie either, and they're popular now.
He could go by Gil, like Gil Grissom on CSI, or maybe by a middle name if kids in school make fun.

I think kids can be very mean but older names are coming back in vogue. I would probably give him a nickname for school. I think if kids are going to make fun of you, they can make a joke of any name.

I think the name just sounds a little old fashioned and outdated. But, like someone else mentioned, Gil could be a good nickname for him. I think that would sound good.

Actually, yes. I'm completely serious. There is no chance of this child having a smooth transition into school. I would suggest changing it immediately.
