My Win98 is full of bugs and keeps rebooting every ten minutes. I have a copy of WinXP and the entry key thingy but I am CLUELESS as to how to install it. When I tried to update the win98 or reinstall it - it was like something was controlling the computer and prevented it from making any changes to it. I read over the specs of what is needed to install it and have more than enough RAM and memory, two CD drives etc. It's when it starts talking about partitioning the hard drive and all that stuff that I freak out. I am NOT a techie person LOL.

If anyone has any info that could help me out I would greatly appreciate it. Do you have any idea how hard it is to get anything done in a ten minute time frame LOL.

If you wish to maintain your present OS, you just simply scan your PC for possible virus or spywares (am sure it is infected). There are good virus softwares (Kaspersky) and spyware (Ad Aware SE Personal). If this does'nt work then you have to reformat your drive (it will totally erased your data). I suggest you use a disc wizard tool (Seagate Disk Wizard if you are using Seagate HDD. Just visit the website of you HDD and normally they have support for this.

On the other hand you can upgrade your OS to XP by simply inserting your XP CD and follow the instructions - it will ask you whether you wish to upgrade or for a fresh install, and it will also ask you if you wish to preserve, delete, reformat (clean install) your existing system.

Of course you need to be ready with your CD Key.

By the way check first whether you meet the requirements HDD Size, Memory, Video Card and etc., for an XP OS. Enjoy..........................

well i might know the answer to your question cause i did it before on my win98. Well if your cant install from just inserting your cd in then restart your computer while having the cd in the cd drive. It should start the installation. But some wont start the installation so you can just start your computer in safe mode which is restarting your computer while pressing F8 and it should have a selection to start in safe mode. In safe mode nothing runs except the windows software only that is necessary to start the computer. This is all i can think of.

And to tell you about partitioning, that is just a section where it has the win98 installed into and if you want you can have a 2nd partition to have winxp, so you will have 2 OS. But normally it just deletes the win98 and replaces with winxp.

Tudor provides the finest answer, if the problematical-force has been formatted with the NTFS format (which it maximum likely is), Win98 cant study that document device. Open MYCOMPUTER, good click contained in the force you want to get good of entry to and choose residences. that is going to inform you there what the document device is - if WIN98 won't be able to study it - that is NTFS.
