Yes, pop stars coming to the U.S. to work - as opposed to coming on vacation - must have a work visa. The visa is a P visa and requires the alien to have a U.S. sponsor and to apply in advance. To get a P visa, you have to show that the artist is internationally known, is coming on a reciprocal exchange, or is culturally unique.

The question is not correct,
the most countries have a special working permit for entertainers. But this have nothing to do with the visa.
The Artist gets a business visa because he have the entertainer working permit. It is a limited working permit only for entertainment professions.
If a Artist come only one time to the country then he get in the most countries no working permit for this one performance, but the agent have to clear the tax for the artist or ask for a temporary working permit.
It is in some countries different, but this is the normal way.

first of all, Canadians don't need a visa to visit the united states just like we don;t need a visa to go to their country. may be they might need it for other countries, like in Europe, Asia or something. but again they don't have to worry about these things. whoever sponsor them take care of these things.
