I used to love going to get wild flowers with my mother. Whether it was in a field, the woods or someones yard. My most favorite was for my sisters graduation we stopped at this man's house in the country side and she knocked on his door and asked permission to cut these huge sprigs of lilacs. It was one of the last good memories I had of her. She was so confident that the man would share his flowers and he even came out to help.

I had a black cat named Leon. He would meet me at the gate every evening whenever I came home from school and he would sit in my room with me playing with whatever I had in my hands, unless I pulled it away. He completely owned the living room and no one could sit in his chair. He was the baby of the house, even the nanny who hated cats liked him. He woke my father up promptly at six every morning we swore he could tell time. His favorite treat was rum & raisin ice cream. He was never afraid from he was a kitten. Reminded me of a little lion. Hence the name Leon.

One day the neighborhood kids and mine brought home the dreaded baby birds. Experience had shown me that raising wild sparrow chicks is almost impossible. We scooped them up and I placed them in a flower pot with nesting material. I fastened the pot to the side of my house as high as I could. Within minutes their mother found them. She finished raising them in that flower pot.Every morning we could hear them peeping for their food. She would tend them every day. One day they flew away. I was relieved. It was great to have the kids observe them grow yet not interfere with their survival.
