I would tell your friend's mom that if she's worried about her daughter ruining her hair, she should buy a high-quality hair straighter and make sure she puts heat protectants in her hair before using the straightener. A heat protects and a high quality straightener protect your hair and keep it from breaking, frizzing, or getting fried (I have a professional hair straightener and I straighten my hair almost every day and i always get compliments on my hair. Most people think my hair is naturally super-straight since my straightener doesn't give me split ends or fries it or anything :) ) I would reccomend the Solia hair straightener or the Sedu (folica.com $90-$130). As for heat protectants, I think biosilk is good, but if she wants something less expensive, go for Loreal's Stuidoline Hot Straight Hair Straightening Cream ($3 at Target and drugstores). She even look up on the internet too see what professional stylists say.

i straighten my hair a majority of 6/7 times a week and my hair is severely damaged. But I have lots of thick hard to straighten hair that has to be straightened at 450 degrees Fahrenheit. If you only straighten your hair 1-2 times a week, on special occasions, and use heat pretection you will have minimal damage. I sugguest using
garner fruits brilliantine shine spray for heat pretection and using a wet to straight flat iron at a low setting (15)

I have naturally very curly hair & I always straiten it. I usually blow dry my hair strait after washing about 2-3 times a week using an ionic dryer & a ceramic round brush (less damaging). Always use a product that will protect the hair when using heat tools. I save the straitener for weekends only as the blow dryer does a good enough job throughout the week while working. Im not saying straiteners are good for your hair but they will not do much harm as long as you use the right tools & products and always look after your hair.

Well I straighten/curl my hair as needed and my hair is very healthy. But typically too much heat WILL damage the hair. I think in addition to the heat, it just depends on how well the hair is taken care of.
