Hi there.....diarrhoea in cats can be caused by multiple things:
Diary products: cats do not have the proper enzymes to properly break down the sugar in milk which is called 'lactose.' You may have heard of people who are lactose-intolerant. They are also missing these digestive enzymes. If the proper enzymes are not present, the lactose remains undigested and tends to ferment in the intestine and cause diarrhea.

The other culprit that could contribute to the diarrhoea may be parasites/worms (coccidia, giardia, roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, etc) so consider a vet visit to have her dewormed since some of the over the counter treatments do not eliminate all the types of parasites. Contrary to what people believe canned food is helpful for cats with diarrhoea as this is a symptomatic of dehydration. Canned diets can supplement the intake of moisture so having both dry and canned are helpful. Any vet can confirm this fact.
Canned pumpkin (without spices) will also help firm up the loose stool symptoms: http://www.pets.ca/pettips/tips-75.htm
Please keep in mind that also sudden changes in food brands, types will also contribute to diarrhoea symtoms as well. So as soon as your new kitty starts on the cat food she may have lingering symtpoms. For more on this: http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/diarrhea . Again any vet can confirm this fact.
The above are just only a few causes as there are many more that can also cause diarrhoea such as diseases, illnesses, etc. Therefore, it is always recommended to consider contacting a vet and discussing if a visit is necessary for treatment.

Well if you are giving her wet food or milk or something with milk in it then that could be the problem. You should stop if that's the case most cats can not handel wet food it will give them the runs and milk or milk type products could play a part. if she has had the runs for more then 4 days take her to the vet just to be sure. Cats need to stay balanced if that balance is shifted then they can get sick really fast i should now. Has she lost weight? drinking a lot? Is there blood in her poop? some times you can't see it but, if the poop is really dark just like a humans then there could be blood in it. Does her fur look dull? does she want a lot of love? Sleep a lot? these are all signs of sickness. I hope she get better soon.

Dairy intolerance as well as intestinal parasites can cause a kitty to have diarrhea. Unless you are giving your kitty dairy on a regular basis, it is probly the latter. I have dealt with this twice with my kitties. The first time it was Coccidia, and the second time it was Giardia, both being intestinal parasites. The Giardia was more recent, and I didn't read about it as throughly, but I know that with the Coccidia, it can cause permanent intestinal damage, and even lead to death. As you say it has been going for a while, I would get a stool sample to the vet immediately, and have both a floatation and a gram stain done. Some vets charge individually for the floatation and gram stain, while others do both for one fee. I paid $26 for both at my vet. If you are like me and $ is a concern, call around and ask how much for a fecal float/ gram stain at different vets. I am especially concerned because you said your kitty is going outside the box. I am confident this is on account of being unable to hold it, as opposed to bad or defiant behavior. As for my experience, in both instances I received medication from the vet, which was relatively cheap- $21 the first time, for Albon, and $12 the 2nd time, for Metranidazole. I HIGHLY recommend getting a stool sample to the Vet ASAP!!!

cats don't weigh much so diahrreah can be serious. Need to take her to the vet. As fas as pooping on the floor--cats are tempermental--can do that at any time. Mine has 3 litter boxes and still ocasionally just decides she doesn't want to use them. Make sure they're cleaned daily --maybe even 2x a day, lots of litter in them.

If it has been going on "for awhile now" you need to get her to a vet! She could easily dehydrate, because cats are not known for drinking fluids. Apparently she has contracted a virus of some sort and needs treatment. Like humans...pets can also become ill with flu and other illnesses

could be something simple as intestinal parasites. It could also be some gastrointestinal upset from food or treats. As a last resort it could just be behavioral. I would contact your vet
