The same reason other races get hair extensions; to add length, color, protect their hair from damage, or so they don't have to worry about styling/doing anything to their natural hair.

lol, cute question. Well I am blessed with long hair and don't wear weave so I will answer according to what various friends have told me when I have asked this question. Some have long hair and choose to get a sewn in (fyi:hair is braided in a circular motion and weave is sewn into braids) why? bc it is easier to manage for one, last much longer than a normal wash & set, and gives normal hair a break from normal conditions. Some simply don't have the hair they wish they did. Some like to use weave for a hairstyle they want instead of cutting natural hair, i.e. cut or color. Some use weave to make hair appear fuller. There are so many reasons. I think asking a question like that is implying that African American women don't embrace their heritage, bc of something simple like hair. Come on now lets be real. That is like if I said, why do Caucasian women tan? I personally/honestly think both questions are ignorant, why? bc everyone has reasons for everything. Lets not ignore the fact that Caucasian women wear weave too so are they ignoring their natural hair bc they choose to wear weave for whatever reason? As stated before, there are many reasons. I have seen many older Black women get sewn in on top of their heads, why? Black women are more prown to thinning hair earlier so they have to work with what they got. One thing I don't agree on with any race is unnatural hair colors. If it can not be humanly grown on a person I don't think anyone should dye their hair that color. Just my .20 cents.

I have no answer for that particular question, but I believe that African American women as well as other women in every culture have a difficult time embracing their heritage or natural beauty. For instance, Asian women want wider eyes, and white women want bigger lips and darker skin, and people with straight hair want curly hair, and people with curly hair want straight hair. I believe that the better question would actually be, "Why do people in general have a hard time embracing their heritage or natural traits.
For the record, I do not believe that the only women who wear weave are African American women.

I used to wear weave but that was only while I was growing out perm. I decided to stop relaxing my hair about a year ago. I finally cut off all the remainder of the perm in May. I can truly say that it has been an eye opening experience. I love the hair GOD has blessed me with. I wish that other woman like me could embrace who they really are. Many black woman put weave in their hair for many different reasons. Some do it for tend setting, some do it because they don't have long hair and want long hair, others it because it is convenient. I feel like they are mainly doing it to fit society's image of what the African American woman should look like. Society has placed a lot of pressure of African American woman to look at certain way(just like every other nationality). I and many others have decided not to fit in but to stand out with beautiful natural hair. The hair that GOD gave us. I can honestly say that I'm happy and I love my hair.

To the idiots saying that kinky/curly hair is unmanageable please shut up. You've obviously never worn your natural hair out before. It's so easy to take care of. Just moisturize your hair properly. I can manage mine and it always looks beautiful. Oh yeah and the reason why most black women wear a straight weave is because there's barely any natural hair weaves or because they're a self hater. Hence the reason why you see several black women wearing blonde weaves with blue contacts. I mean there are some black people with blue eyes and blonde hair but that's a small percentage. I don't wear weave often but when I do, I try to look for one with a similar texture to mine. But the very kinky curly ones are super expensive. There are some black people with real hair textures that look like an Indian weave so some with that texture wear the weave with that texture cause it looks similar to there hair. I can get my hair to look like that although it's shorter.

African Americans have been conditioned for years to believe that their is ugly. Personally, I love my hair and I'm African American. I don't wear extensions. I can understand if someone chooses to do that just to change a hairstyle but for everyday wear?...no, I don't think so.

Are you black? Sisters wear hair weaves because they look good in them!! It has nothing to do with embracing their heritage. Why do white women get tans? Are they trying to be black? Why don't THEY embrace their whiteness? Trying to be black............. Sisters are born regal
