Get two males I believe the get along better. When I was younger I had first got one then after a while i bought him a lil friend. At first they didn't really get a long but then they got used to being around each other so much all the time they became best buds. Parakeets are smart too. Don't let anyone tell you they aren't because everyday when i would come home from school I would whistle to them and say where is my little ceilito (his name) and before you know it at night when it was real quiet they would start whistling and even learned to say where is my little ceilito very fast and high pitched. So yeah parakeets are fun and can make good pets just don't neglect them treat them as if they were a member of the family. A little whistling wouldn't hurt either.

I've always kept two parakeet's it was anybodies guess weather they were male or female, for it is very difficult to tell. You go by the color of there beaks, I was looking at the wrong end. Anyway, they do require considerable work, for they throw bird seed all over the place, and they sing alot, will need a cover to put over bird pen, this usually makes them think it's dark and they will roost, with the cover pulled down. There paper in the cage needs changing daily. Not trying to discourage you.. Just wanted to share if your a first time parakeet owner, they do require considerable cleaning up after.

I would get 2 because you don't want the other one to get lonely, but it might not like the other bird. Now if you get 1 it could get lonely but it easier take care of than 2.But i think you should get 2.I have 2 parakeets and there really nice and sometimes the whistle a song to you.Now if you get a Chihuahua you might want to keep it away from your parakeet. :)Oh by the way get a male and female. :)

Get one male parakeet.
If you get more than one they tend to bond with each other and ignore you. Males are more vocal and, in my opinion, sweeter. Females get cranky around breeding time, and lay eggs even if there is no male to fertilize them. Usually it's not a problem (other than the "Yuck" factor), but occasionally the egg gets stuck making the bird very sick, and sometimes kills her.
Keep the bird away from the dog. All dogs have a certain amount of "prey drive", which means they will harm other animals thinking they are prey. Even a little Chihuahua may lunge at a small animal. You want to avoid accidental tragedy.

If you want a parakeet thats going to be very friendly if you spend lots of time with it, get one...if you arent going to have alot of time to spend, get too so they can keep each other company. As long as the cage isn't sitting on the floor, most likely your dog won't even know they are there. Parakeets make awesome pets...just make sure you have enough toys to keep them occupied...they LOVE to chew! As for male and female, most likely the pet store employees wont be able to tell the difference, so don't worry about it, you aren't planning on breeding them so it's not a huge problem to worry about.

If you want the bird to be close to you, only get one, then he will bond with you. I think males make the best pets. They are more likely to talk and are generally friendlier. I would suggest being careful around your dog. He might get jealous if you quit paying attention to him. Parakeets (also known at Budgerigars) are a great first bird to own. They are easy to train and keep and are inexpensive. They dont require a huge amount of space and are not as noisy as larger parrots.
There are a few things you need to know. First of all make sure your bird has a good diet. This consists of a good FRESH seed mix, millet sprays, fresh dark green vegies, like brocolli, kale or romaine lettuce. Dont use iceburg lettuce, as it will give your bird diarhea. Other vegies that are good are carrot, corn, sweet potato, and almost any others that you can get them to eat. Avoid avocado, as it is a little toxic. Get the largest cage you can afford, as the bird needs to be able to move around. Good luck!

Get two. A male and a female is fine. i have had several parakeets and i've liked them as pets. i also have two dogs a doberman and a smaller one. The doberman would get excited when they would squawk and beat their wings and jump up. depending on the dog it might effect him but my birds dont make any difference to my little dog. i have my parakeets in the same cage with finches and they seem to get along fine.
hope this helps.

i have 2 para keets. get 2. well its your choose but. if you get 1 it will be more friendlier though it will get lonely. if you get two you wont have to worroy much. to keep them keep them in a bird cage that is large. i have to answer to the male and female thing but i have 6 birds in all. my rottweiler is friendly to all of them. it depends on the dog. does your dog chase birds outside or rabbits. you need to spend time with them everyday. at first they may peck. but if you treat them right you can let them fly around in the house. love is needed

get it only if you gots lots of time and patience...also, if your getting a pair, be ready for lots of babies, parakeets can lay up to 8 eggs per nesting time, which 5-6 hatch....so if you a pair, pretty soon you'll have 7, then 28, 70 and so on....be carefull, i have 10 so far...and pretty soon they'll be nesting again...but i think im ready for it....
