i have burned some movies to a dvd-RW but they dont work in my dvd player. what do i have to do to make them work? do i need to use a DVD-R or does it matter?

You will want to create the DVD in the MPEG format.

First - you need a DVD Writer, second you need a good software that will not just create a DVD R disk (That's read only on computers), but one that created a full package Movie disc with Audio and video separation. The best one that's available now is NERO, its mostly shipped with the DVD writer itself.

Yes you got it. Use a DVD-R. I recommend the Sony brand it is compatible with many DVD players.
