1) We can never flee the misery that is within us.

It took me a long while to realize that I cannot escape myself. Many moons ago, I had an ex-girlfriend tell me that I was looking for escape. I agreed with her but I was not sure from what I was seeking escape. Many moons later, in a hotel bar I sat drinking gin with a woman I met that weekend. As the night progressed we began waxing philosophical about our lives. After having drank enough to clear my mind, I had an epiphany about my own life, which I managed to slur in her ear: "You cannot escape yourself. No matter where you run you are still there." It was then that I realized what I had been trying to escape was something internal to myself, a melancholic spirit. I no longer try to escape that part of me, for that spirit has been, remains today, and will continue to be part of who I am.

I think the second quote, "Adversity is like a strong wind. It tears away from us all but the things that cannot be torn, so that we see ourselves as we really are.”, and the fourth quote,“Whatever our struggles and triumphs, however, we may suffer them, all too soon they bleed into a wash, just like watery ink on paper.”, are great quotes. They remind us that adversity is what makes us who we are and the fourth one down plays everything and reminds us to keep everything in perspective.
The others are also very true...just so damned depressing...

Some of those are depressing. But I would say 2. It sounds like a nice quote.

The first quote.
It's good that we can never flee misery, so we learn to deal with our miseries and grow from them.

It's bad when we can never flee misery, especially when we can not resolved them and they haunt us every day of our lives. Not good.
