Dogs need attention and company. If you are gone 11 hours and want a dog then make sure there is someone to let you dog outside or have someone take them for a walk. Leaving a dog that long can and does cause behavioral problems in some dogs. They need lots of love and attention, just food and water is not enough for a dog.

I'm not so worried about the dog messing up your house, I'm more concerned that it will be neglected and lonely. Neglected dogs tend to act out, which is why a lot of dogs end up at the Humane Society.
I also think it' cruel to expect a dog to go eleven+ hours without being able to relieve itself. Could you do that?
If you need to be gone more than 6-8 hours at a time regularly, and you don't have at least 2 hours a day to bond with your dog, don't get one. Get a cat.

If you're gone that much, you shouldn't have a dog. They are social animals and require love and attention.

Wait until your schedule provides for you to be home in the middle of the day, or home earlier from work.

If you make a fair amount of money, your dog could go to doggie daycare or you could hire someone to walk it mid-day, then that would be fine.

Still, you wouldn't have a child if you were going to be gone 11 hours, and then sleeping 8 hours, that leaves only 5 hours a day to spend with the animals.

It's just not the right timing for you. Get a cat. They don't care if you're home or not.

Get an older dog from the pound. Be sure it's housebroken. Then you don't have to go through the horrible puppy phase (chewing the furniture, shoes, dvds, anything they can get to) or the kennel training phase. Put in a doggy door so they can go pee when they need to go, not when you are conveniently home. No matter what age a dog you get, 12 horus is tooooo long to wait to pee.

it's very hard on a dog, cats are better at coping...plus, you will never train a puppy correctly this way..just ask me, I did this and I am still paying...I have stock in a mop company :)ps. absolutely do not get a yorkie...they need constant attention and are a nervous wreck when left alone....and I have seven other dogs and work from home......

You'd be better off w/a cat. Dogs need more love & attention.
