If you have a single column of words, each on its own line, ending with a "return," Control +A to select all the words, then choose Table, Sort, sort by field 1.

If they are in a table with headings, select the whole table.
Then select Table, Sort. Click the "my list has header" button.
Select the heading on which to sort.

If they are in a table without headings, select the whole table.
Select Table, Sort, then indicate the column on which you want to sort.

Look under "Table" and there is a "Sort" selection there, at least there is in MS Word 2000
