I have a male and a female cockateil that barely layed eggs, they never layed on the eggs before, but these two eggs the male is almost always on them, the female hardly lays on them, but is it bad that the eggs are at the bottom of the cage, not in a nesting box, and also at night time when they get covered they get off the eggs, only sometimes they stay on, but they usely stay off, is that okay for them to do that

I use to breed cockatiels, They generly dont do well on the bottom of the cage but it works sometimes. The male will lay on the eggs during the day and the hen at night 2 is a very low number of eggs..There is a yahoo group cockatiel_breeders@yahoogroups.com lots of good people there who will walk you through it. They need better food while breeding
which may be why you have low egg numbers. It sounds like you have a good male and perhaps a female who is too young or old and bred out.Its ok that they get off the eggs a bit ..I would give them privacy...Good Luck

Eggs should be in a nesting box. If your birds do not have a nesting box that is probably why they do not lay many eggs. The nesting box helps to keep the warmth & humidity in with the eggs as well as keeping the eggs safe. It is perfectly normal for the male to spend a lot of time on the eggs.

If you wish to try to successfully breed your cockatiels get them a nest box, make sure the female gets plenty of calcium (you should anyway, lack of calcium can cause soft eggs that can lead to egg binding {getting stuck in the hen} and possibly death), make sure when they have eggs that they have plenty of water to bath in.

Good luck!

one thing to do is to get the birds out of the cage for like 5 minutes to get the eggs into a nesting box...just don't let the birds see you touch the eggs....it's fine if the guy lays on them...it's natural..if i were you i'd get a bird book on cockateils......it tells how to deal with birds that lay eggs

my grandma has cockatiel birds and they dont have to be on the eggs 24/7 if he's on them at all times but at night they should hatch fine. check the eggs though but dont touch them cause then the birds wont want to touch them anymore but make sure theyre aren any holes or anything keep an eye out because they might not take super long to hatch.

woman Cockatiel does lay egg,yet whilst the female would not have an mate it is going to (no longer) hatch.by way of fact the egg would be un-firtle,and it can't take a seat on the egg by way of fact it is going to starve if it has a mate it may take a seat on the egg for days while not having out of the nest by way of fact the mate delivers the female foodstuff and the egg will hatch if it has a mate if no longer then it would not.

i have 3cockatiels. my birds have layed eggs but they didnt hatch. you need a nesting box. the eggs laid probably wont hatch but dont remove them. birds (cockatiels) lay eggs in cluths. cluthches hold 2-8 eggs. if i were u i would buy a breeders book if you want them . this is probably the first step ask a succesful breeder
