First, acknowledge that perfect hair only exists in magazine ads and on TV and movies....then try these things:

Use shampoo on the roots primarily and just rinse the shampoo through the rest of your hair, to avoid drying roots further.

Use conditioner on the ends of your hair, skip it on your roots. It helps to use an intensive conditioner on the ends of your hair, wrap it in a plastic bag and let it soak in....overnight, if possible, then just rinse out, without shampooing.

Try to let your hair dry naturally rather than with a hair dryer whenever possible. I wash at night and let it air dry, then style in the morning. Keeps ends from drying further.

Limit the heat used to style. Turn down the temperature on the flat iron or curling iron...to the minimum necessary to do the job. Do not leave the the iron on one spot for too long. Be sure it is dry before you use appliances on it.

Let your hair have a break on the weekends, or when you are just hanging out at home.

Never use rubber bands to pull back your hair!

Eliminate styling products with any form of alcohol, it dries your hair. Also, get a trim often to reduce split ends.

For a while, try to reduce the use of chemicals such as perms, straighteners, or hair colors. Bleach is especially hard on hair.

Good luck!

Peace!

I have the same problem...Aussie has a product called Dual Personality Root Cleanser/Tip Mender Shampoos and Conditioners that are made for this exact problem. I have been using this for a while and they work great. Plus, they are less than $3 each, so very affordable and you can buy them almost anywhere.

I hope this helps!

Brush your hair more. That oil at your roots is your bodies natural protection for your hair. Brushing from the scalp down will bring those oils down and coat the rest of your hair.

Get regular trims, and use a shampoo for your specific hairtype/condition. Avoid conditioner/styling product on your roots.

you should get your ends trimmed in order for it to grow. If you donot cut your split ends soon, they will continue to worsen and your hair will continue to damage.
