It's called an Elizabethan collar like someone else said. It's usually given to pets when they have been treated for some sort of health issue. I actually just put one on my cat the other day (after a visit to the vet) because he scratched his cornea or something in his eye and it's to prevent him from pawing at his eye to rub it and make it worse. I had another cat that had the "lampshade" put on because he had a drain & stiches in his back and he wasn't supposed to bother them.

Since they don't have the sense to not pull at stitches or lick wounded areas, the collars are put in place to "help" them out a little. =)

It's called an Elizabethan Collar. It's called that because it looks like those big white collars that people wore during Queen Elizabeth I's and Shakespeare's time.
The purpose of it is to keep animals from chewing and/or licking at a wound or surgery site. If the wound is on the face, it keeps them from scratching or rubbing at it.

It's to stop the dog from bothering a wound, most likely one that has stitches.

I had a doberman / lab mix that went through 13 of them in 10 days! She had stitches in her paw and pulled them out the first night. We had to put the collar on her because if she got the stitches out again there wouldn't be enough skin to stitch them up again. She was just too smart and she would bend the collar to get it to her mouth, then turn it and continue.

Luckily she never completely destroyed it before we got home from work to put a new one on her.

It's called an Elizabethan collar at least thats what we call it. It is to prevent the animal from licking off medicine or pulling out stitches. The main purpose is to prevent the animals mouth from reaching any part of his body. It is so the animal can heal.

It is also called a cone... for preventing pets from scratching and biting. It prevents wounds. This isn't one of those lengthy explanations I usually give as there are many good ones that explain it well above...

I forget what they are called, but when a dog gets injured and has a wound they put it over the dogs head, so the dog doesn't scratch at the wound.

It is generally used when an animal has had surgery or some other medical treatment. It is to keep them from being able to bite at the bandages or medication.

It's cool to ask questions when you wonder about something...makes you smarter!

Can't remember what it is called but it is used so the animal can not lick a sore area or possible pull out stitches.

it's is a cone shaped thing the vets put on them after they have work done that they don't want them to lick or bite at. With the cone inplace they can't reach around and go to town.

When pets get surgery or something like that they will lick or chew themselves and they need to heal. The lampshade thing prevents that from happening.
