Coca Cola used to be a medicine, containing several herbs and other thing, it also contained extracts of the leafes of the coca plan. The idea was to decrease tiredness, depressions and headaches. The effect against tiredness is the main reason why it contains caffine.

Anonymous,
To answer you question, I will ask you a question. Have you ever drank a decaffinated cola, if so what did you think of the taste. Thats what I figured. Caffine is a natural ingredient that comes in the making of cola's. The removal of the caffine is death to taste of the drink.

Cola, by definition is drink made from kola nuts which naturally contain caffeine just like coffee beans do. Although I don't think modern cola drinks contain real kola nut extract, the caffeine is probably a part of the imitation. Other types of soda probably include caffeine to produce the same effect as cola.

Back in the day, Coca-Cola had genuine cocaine in it to give its drinkers a little lift. And did it ever! The law eventually required its removal, so caffeine was substituted. 7-Up used to have lithium in it, back in the 1950s. It would lift you up a bit, too...
